From experience; what I do now, is to go for an interview and then forget about it and carry on applying for others. Some people don't bother getting back in touch if you've not been successful and some don't have the time to contact everybody.
If I hear back then it's a bonus but I don't rely on it too much and never let it affect job hunting; although I did have a lazy lodger a few years back who'd apply for a job and then wait to see what happened before moving on to the next.

Yes but when a recruitment agency asks you this how should you respond? Give an honest answer or convey interest by saying yes and giving some company names?
  • Dont give other names, especially to an agency, as the first thing they will do is go to that company and try and sell them some of their candidates thus increasing the competition for you.

I personally would say yes but then when I am job hunting the honest answer would be yes.

If an agency, say yes, but express a preference in the job they're trying to put you forward for and do not give them company names at any cost.

You can say what type of role for what sized company etc, but keep it vague. If pushed, say it's confidential at this stage, but it definitely isn't a company that agency has mentioned to you before, so no conflict there.

Ah sorry, i just thought it was a general question.
I just tell them that I've had a couple of interviews and waiting to hear back. If they ask who with it's always a bit tricky, as like InsideInsurance said, they could be hawking for new leads..... but not all companies use one agency so they might be asking incase they're calling about the same job.
If it's a regular agency contact then sometimes I'll tell them but often I'll just tell them what role it was for, the location and the industry so they can work out if it's one they're dealign with or not. If they do keep pushing I'll remind them that they never tell me who their role is for until I've been offered an interview.

Just to agree with some of the comments already stated .Never ever tell them of your ongoing job applications and especially interviews you have lined up.

They will want to put their own candidates forward for the role jeopardising your chances of getting the job which you probably sourced yourself. You have nothing to gain by telling them this and potentially your next job to lose.

Never give the names of anyone you have seen to anyone, job or agency alike. If you have had interviews and you are waiting to hear from them I would just put on the application form 'none' and if asked in person at an interview would say I have made a few applications this week and waiting to hear back on them. Never let on you have had or will be having another interview.

    why not?....
  • If I am asked at interview if I have any other interviews or positions in progress I always answer yes, even if it's a lie, but wouldn't give details. If they want you for the role it's likely they will speed things along to try and make sure they get you. If it was a recruitment company who was asking I would always say no.
There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
  • 'none relevant to my application'..?
