The person you spoke to is not a police officer,(civilian personnel),and does not know what they are talking about,(you have been given the relevant highway code link by Al Mac,read it), if he is prepared to put up with obstruction, that is up to him.
Not all "large country houses" have " a public right of way" and therefore that would be trespass.

Yep police officers dont answer the phone , they have station support people for that.

Me smells someine who has been proved wrong and is wrigling out of it.

I wonder if there's some confusion between blocking a driveway (illegal) and parking in a 'layby' which some roads have to provide parking for residents who don't have driveways........
If the OP is talking about a layby, as long as it isn't clearly signed 'residents parking only' then yes, anyone can park there.

The "layby" would not be accross some ones drive.
The OP states "have noticed that people with drive's have no double yellow line's", to me that reinforces the illegal point about obstructing the driveway, the Council saving paint, as it would not be required!

  • i can only tell you what i have been told,i'm a nice person really and i would not obstruct on purpose,i can only go on what i have been told.If you look at it logically nobody own's the space outside there home and i suppose that what it's all about and clearer definition is needed,i will bow out now gracefully.

Every post you have made on this thread contradicts the part of your quote I have highlighted! You have and said you will continue to obstruct some ones driveway, I really hope your "nice" traffic warden sees your car and tickets it. you are not a nice person

It IS illegal,(what if the car is in the garage?)it is called OBSTRUCTION

A garage wasn't mentioned,I said it isn't illegal if there is no vehicle on the driveway,as you are not causing an obstruction, just an inconvenience and being a nuisance. This happened soooo many times in our previous house (the reason we moved) the police attended many times as I threatened to bump the cars out of the way ;) but each time they said that as our car was not on the drive, nobody was commiting an offence, except me if I damage the other cars
I think this thread is a bit of a wind up :o

You might be right about the wind up.

Re the garage, I mentioned this because the car could be in the garage and therefore can not be driven off the drive in any event, just because it cannot be seen does not mean it is not on the property, see posts #9 &#10. it IS obstruction, maybe your police force does not want to implement the law, but they are then not doing the job for which they are paid for,(there are traffic divisions that deal with this type of incident), my police force have always been helpful, either by phoning the lawbreaker or coming round, but in every case they had it removed.

Somebody has paid good money to have the kerb dropped - they have the right to get to their drive.

By your argument I could build a wall or something right across the front of your property border - blocking you from entering or exiting your home - but that's Ok because you don't own the pavement outside your house.

As long as their car isn't on the drive that will be perfectly acceptable :D

There is no clearer definition needed. the quotes from the OFFICIAL police and goverment websites already been offered on this thread are clear enough.
