Good evening MSE forum team, I appreciate you are all busy and this question may seem a little tedious but I would be grateful if you can clarify the rules of a particular board.

Apparently my post according to bookworm63 is against MSE rules:

Ouch - don't shoot the messenger!

I don't make the rules; just trying to save your a$$ (as I also did yesterday!) before Redfox catches up with you. I'm sure he's posted the reasons for this in the past, but from what I remember it threatens the status of our thread and none of us want to lose it!!!

The link is still there....
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=49875023&postcount=7210

Now bearing in mind I was the original poster who found this voucher and posted it in the correct board, discount codes etc I can't see what the issue is here?

I understand that we are not allowed to post link's to vouchers that the manufacture has removed and we are not allowed to swap/eamil each other these vouchers as this breaches MSE forum rules, but for the life of me I can't see what I have done that is against the forum rules for this paticular poster to keep screeching at me that I am breaking the forum rules.

Would be grateful if the forum team can clarify whether I am indeed breaking the rules. TIA.

You seem to have forgotten your last response:
And I will leave the link there, love. If you have an issue with it report my dam post and be done with it already. Jesus christ what's the dam point in helping others if you continue to rap my dam knuckles. I have never seen anything about not posting coupons, I have seen people being told off for asking for others to send them coupons that have been pulled by the manufacturer, as this clearly breaches MSE rules about personal details.

I removed the link yesterday as it clearly wasn't allowed after I was told I couldn't link directly to a removed coupon.

Another option is meh stuff it I just won't bother posting any coupon finds or deals that I find myself and just keep them to myself and leech from all the other posters who do the hard work.

God it's like being back in primary school!

I'm certainly not screeching at you and have no wish for any bad feeling, but MSE has rules which we all need to observe. In the spirit of MSE, we should all help each other to stay within the rules (rather than reporting first which takes up admin time and may get posters into trouble). Guess I might have to rethink that one...

In the absence of a reply from the team, I've dug around and found this, which is a quote from the forum rules:

What kind of discussions are allowed but with restrictions?
Certain topics must be kept to individual boards, in order to better protect the site. Please help us in this aim by keeping all discussion in the correct boards.

    Discount Codes & Vouchers
    • We are happy for forum users to share codes, however they are only allowed on the Discount Codes 'n Vouchers Board and must be sourced and indicated who the code/voucher is targeted at. Any posts not meeting these rules are removed when reported and any persistent posters are banned from the site. It's only by doing this that we can protect people from law suits and breaching terms and conditions. Please don't private message other people requesting codes.

There is also this sticky from Martin at the top of the Grabbit board:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/25252

We've had several comments on the various misprices threads from Redfox saying that posts have had to be deleted and giving the reasons why with a link to this rule.

Of course if I've got the wrong end of the stick then I apologise as I don't want to waste anyone's time, but equally if there is a persistent disregard for MSE rules then the viability of the thread will be questioned.

I look forward to the team clarifying this for everybody.

The rules, if there's a reason to have, about discount codes are not explanatory. Why do we even need rules? May be that needs to be explained so that people don't make mistakes and be vilified.

I notice you deleted your last comment cosmic-dust (or maybe the mods did). Either way it doesn't bother me whether I'm on your 'Ignore List' or not.

I see the offending post has now been deleted; it's just a shame there is not feedback about the issue from a moderator...
  • As an outsider on this topic, I have always found the (apparent) "silence" of MSE Towers on this matter rather concerning - the Forum Team always say that you can email them for more details on a decision they've made about your posts, but there have been a few MSErs in the past who have done just that but have said later that they didn't get a reply.

May be the whole point of having the faq and rules is for us to refer to that for answers?

Apart from that they do answer to emails if anything needs addressing, or that's been my experience.

I just posted that above because I cannot stand and watch someone being harassed. Someone allegedly broke the rule, so what's so earthshattering about it. Just report and leave it with the team to handle it.

And I don't understand this discount code rule anyway. I remember me posting on hotels and parking in the middle of conversations and I've seen others do the same. I suspect it is a genuine mistake people make and not as if someone wakes up in the morning and thinks, today I'm going to look for a board where the discount code shouldn't be posted and post it exactly there and get a thrill out of it. In any case no one has monopoly of discoun codes; it's floating about everywhere on the net, so don't be too attached to it, for peace sake.
  • Perhaps, meher, but it does leave them on dodgy ground imo. If they seemingly refuse to discuss the matter with the person affected, then it looks bad on them, and leaves Martin open to the use of the law (not saying anyone would go that far in this country, but we're becoming more and more like America every day in this regard).

And we would like you to know that we don't supply copies of coupons, it's against MSE rules so please don't ask.
This was posted at the start of the new thread and once again it still reads to me that you aren't allowed to ask for copies of coupons that the manufacture has pulled and others have saved the coupon to their computer. Again it does not tell me that I am not allowed to post links to the actual coupon!

However I have been watching the thread more lately rather than posting and I certainly am not the only one to post links to specific coupons, but it appears I'm the only one to get bawled at for it!

  • Hi there

I think your original posts were on the Grabbit board and we ask people to not to post discount codes, vouchers etc there but on the Discount Vouchers board.

I think you will find that my original posts were not in the grabbit board, but in the gone but was it any good section. But glad to see the rule only applies to me ;)
