Getting into Manhatten from JFK

HI
Someone please give me some advice

I am travelling alone with my 12 year old daughter the 16th.

We will be coming from JFK to Broadway. I have been to NY before and got a cab with 2 other girls so was straight forward and nice and easy.

Thing is this time just us two,not being tight but would prefer not to pay tons of dollars for a cab when I can do cheaper way.

Can someone please explain in idiot terms whats an alternative way and how much,so I understand as keep looking on here and getting in such a muddle

Thanks so much and really appreciate this
xx

    Hi

This question is answered by the fab NYC thread. I've found a link which should answer your question.

My 12 year old named NYC the best place she had ever visited so I hope yours feels the same :)

Get the Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica Station, then take the 7-Train from Jamaica to 42nd st/Times Square - Dead easy and puts you on Broadway and at the main interchange for just about all the transport options you could want.

You can also get a Metro Card at Jamaica which is superb value for all bus/subway travel in NY for the specifies period.

Agree with Pogofish. The Airtrain to Jamaica costs $5 per person. Then a subway ride is $2.25 each, or you can get a one week full pass for $21 each. A quicker if slightly more expensive option is the Long Island Railroad LIRR from Jamaica to NY Penn Station, costs a few $ more than the subway.

    Its $29 each not $21.

Despite the expense have you consider a cab may be worth it for a few reasons.

Most subways dont have lifts/escalators so you will need to man/woman handle your bags upstairs.
A cab is door to door so no faffing about.
And your daughter may appreciate seeing that skyline as you drive towards it you obviously dont get that, apart from a slight glimpse from the airtrain,on the subway

I'm sure it's answered on the NY thread but a cab from NYC to Newark is double the cost as they can't pick up a return fare.

    Look at the NY thread

    Newark

Newark isn't actually in New York. It is in New Jersey. But it is so close to Manhattan it is a good airport to fly into.

Taxi - Taxi's cost between $55 - $65 plus tolls (around $10) and tips (20%) and can take anything between 35 minutes up to an hour. Works the same way really at the airport, get a taxi from the dispatcher, and sit back and enjoy.

I know this is a guide how to get TO New York, but bear in mind that a NYC Taxi will charge you the meter fare plus $10 when going to Newark, because it is "out of state". As it is in a different state, it is

    BTW
I hope to go to the F1 too!

My apologies on the price, I knew it was twenty-something ;)

My wife actually preferred the subway entrance to Manhattan, those first moments on exiting the subway at Times Square were awesome. The scale of the place just hits you!

If you are going back to the airport in a cab, I would suggest pre-booking one, instead of trying to hail one on the street with all your luggage etc in freezing cold

    Ive used this company before

there are also coupons you can print off the website and hand to the driver. Says its $47 to go to Newark plus toll and tip. And if its peak hour there may be another charge.

I also found they dont drive like theyre on a suicide mission like the other cab drivers!

For Newark there is also the option of the NJ Transit train from Penn station.
