Where can I buy underlay online

I saw a posting a few months ago, where a couple of good (cheap) suppliers of underlay and carpet grippers could be bought. I can't find it now so does anybody have a good supplier.

I am getting carpets fitted, and have decided it will be cheaper to buy fit my own.

I'll need carpet grippers too, for two rooms, but no doubt where the underlay is cheap, so will the grippers.

I used http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/ for my underlay and was very happy indeed with the price and the service.

We got the best underlay we could get (Cloud 9 11mm) and only bothered with a cheapest carpet. Have to say that the difference is amazing.

Get the best underlay you can afford.

I used that company too. I could buy by Metre squared and it worked out cheaper (including postage) than B&Q. Also I bought 10mm underlay (foam - it was in Clearance sale) for cheaper than B&Q value 6mm underlay.

I looked at other websites but you need to check the postage as for some it would work out cheaper going to a store.

I wouldn't fit the carpet yourself. For the sake of £35 you might as well get it done properly. I did the gripper and underlay myself but paid a fitter for the carpet

My original post should have read buy and fit my own underlay .. that was all, but in my haste, forgot the key word.

The same underlay I got (11mm Cloud 9) is £7 per roll more expensive at fabflooring than it is at tradepriced (I haven't included delivery)

Just wondering if you order carpet and underlay from the same shop would they give you a discount?

Delivery is the issue with something as bulky as that,

I'm all for saving money but you have to be sensible here. If something goes wrong in a few months time, eg, the carpet tears or shows wear, who would you claim off?, the carpet manufacturer, the underlay manf/supplier?, or the fitters, ie, yourself?

I honestly think it's false economy in this case.

Update !! I was the original poster here.

I was all set to buy Cloud 9, 11 mm underlay online but have another question first


Today I was speaking to folk at a couple of local carpet shops. the first mentioned the same underlay and said it was £7 / m2 (wow, a lot more than the online price)

The second though, who seemed remarkably honest, said that he would not use this, as it tends to compress down, so is niot the best for the carpet. When I asked about this, he was saying the shops etc push it, mainly because it is easier to handle due to it's weight. Suppliers offloading from a wagon, fitters carrying it into a house and anybody in between finds it much easier, which is why it is promoted so much.

If I am going to buy online, is the Treadaire option maybe a better bet.

We used the nimbus a while back before we moved house, made the cheapo carpet feel so much more expensive. We were there just over a year after fitting it and tbh I didnt notice any problems with even the higher usage areas.
