Inevitably it's a trade off between the facilities jobs etc and living near an air port.

Most people put off are like those that are looking for peace and quiet and nice garden in central Birmingham - you don't look for that there or a quiet rural/suburban location near an airport.

LOL- it was late Autumn that I was posting on another site while on the train, and, walking up to ticket gate, heard my user name being referred to in conversation ( in a good way) over the advice given.

Cue sudden stop to check shoelaces

  • I live under the flight path of Southampton Airport. Fortunately the runway is limited by a railway line at one end and the M27 at the other so the size of the aircraft is limited and at the moment night flights are limited to 2-3 a week, if that.

In the summer if out in the garden you just stop talking for 15 seconds while an incoming flight goes over about 100' up, but most locals don't worry about it at all.

So if the size of the aircraft is limited and there are not too many of them it may not be too bad.

I rent near Cambridge airport which seems to be quite busy with both light aircraft and jets of all sizes. Not sure about sale prices, but rental tends to be cheaper in this part of town. During the summer there is constant aircraft noise at the weekends so it is difficult to enjoy any quiet time in the garden. I used to live on the other side of town (3 miles away from the airport) and there was little to no aircraft noise. In fact, before looking to move to my present location, I was not even aware of the airport's existence. The first house that I looked at in this area was much closer to the airport, and there was a strong smell of aviation fuel.

I would suggest that as long as you are not under the flight path and you are at least a couple of miles away from the airport then it is likely to have a net positive effect on house prices.
Comparing east and west of Cambridge in terms of airport is a little unrealistic. West Cambridge is more expensive because it is nicer. Cambridge Airport is not Heathrow.
    Been away for a while.

Living in Sussex always leads to amusement with the regular suspects writing to the authorities and appearing on local radio and tv about the evils of Gatwick Airport.

They moved to a rural area while wanting the benefits of an expanding New Town and Airport but expect the world to stop in tune with their retirement.

Its even more amusing when they are interviewed at home showing off the stacks of files, correspondence and clippings they have made a retirement career out of.

If they have that much energy and capacity there are numerous charities that could use them, and they can get away from the noise too :)

Was in Earlshall Road and then on the Progress Estate. Dunno how you didn't notice the planes!

Okay, back to it, peeps... :D

Lived in Glenesk for 18 years  honestly never noticed, but was a kid so probably had other things to worry about like the lido !

And for the poster spunko2010, believe me or not, I can be in Gatwick in 15 minutes and have no noise at all. I have a friend in Lingfield who moans all the time and you can notice it in their garden but not inside.

I live 10 mins from Belfast International can see the flights come in sometimes from kitchen in distance but no noise whatsoever and its location close but not adjacent to the airport can only help house prices IMO

Blimey, I was almost on the corner with Glenesk Road! Only a couple of houses into that end of Earlshall. Was in my 20s/30s when I lived there (for around 3 years, I think) so don't know the lido, think it shut way before.
