Hi, my son is 17 years old and has recently passed his test. He has just bought a 51 reg Peugeot 206 1.1cc car and we are trying to find an insurance company who will insure him fully comprehensive in his own name. The cheapest I can find is £2,300 which is more than the price of the car and as he is paying it himself find this horrendous. Would very much appreciate any help in finding a much cheaper quote. Many thanks.x

more than the price of the car
maybe reduced by going to the 'box' people who will install a box in the car to monitor driving and/or limit him to certain hours
a young ' new driver' relative got a 106 insurance down to 1400 via one of the box people - but may other varables like post code etc whch can affect0 -
Ok first and foremost, the 206 peugeot is quite an expensive car for a 17 year old male to insure even though its a 1.1.
My advice (being a 19 year old male who just passed) Aviva. Somone on here reccomended them to me last week, and they were £1600 for a 1.2 clio. factoring in that im 2 years older your looking at £2000 ( saving 300)
make sure he has 3 named drivers down who are all 40+ with clean records prefferabley female. Mums and Aunts and Grandmothers are the best. Play around with what order you type in their details too, shuffling the order about saved me a couple hundred quid.
Aviva and Elephant are both less expensive when compared to others.
Go into the store as well, your local brokers may be able to a deal near the end of the month!
make sure you write down any reference numbers you have for online quotes, take them in store and see if they will try and beat it etc.
dont even bother with the insurethebox people. they are cowboys.
i got a quote for £6600 for a 1.1 106 that cost £700.
passplus may make a big enough difference to warrent doing the course.
And finally, untill december 2012 us males will be discriminated against for being "boy" racers. Even though we arn't.0 -
hi, i have been reading your reccomendations, but still unable to get a decent quote! i just do not know what i am doing wrong!
im 17 and passed just over a month ago, been looking for quotes on a 1-1.2L corsa as thats what im thinking of buying, havent been able to find a cheaper quote then 4000 as a main driver! ive tried adding named drivers as parents but still it doesnt lower it! im not sure what im doing wrong, how are you guys getting quotes under 2000?0 -
That sounds a pretty good price for first time insurance on his own.
My nephew got his insurance renewed in December and he paid £800 - with 5 years no claims. He started looking for another car last week and got quotes which were coming out much more expensive than the month before, so he did another comparison on the car that he has and paid £800 and the quotes this month were coming out at £2300. How can they say that it has gone up so much in less than a month?0 -
Bear in mind that your age isn't the only thing that's taken into account, things like the area you live in has a bearing on the premium, as does where you leave the car overnight and also whether you are male or female. You can't expect your premium to be identical to everyone else of the same age.
I feel sorry for younger drivers and the extorionate premiums they are often asked to pay. It seems very unfair. I remember my first car being a 1.0l VW Polo and I thought the premium of £440 a year was extorionate then. That was back in the mid-90's.0 -
Main reasons for quote will be inexperience, male (soon to change), postcode and car! You can't change the first three but you might get a lower quote on for instance a classic mini or a volvo estate! Seriously uncool but insurers do not like Corsa's because a lot of new male drivers have them - presumably because they can be kevved up - and they have a lot of claims.
Suggest you speak to a motor broker in your area (not Swintons because they have awful reviews) and get them to give you a few quotes on different vehicles.
Also try insurers such as Aviva, Co-op and NFU who don't deal with aggregator sites. £4k is a lot of money, but there are drivers with a similar profile to you who are quoted a lot more.0 -
I have to say that I find £2300 fairly cheap - I haven't been able to get under £3k as a 21 year old.
The insurance policy is not really related to the price of the car much, which is something most people don't understand. It's the potential to cause damage to third parties - that's why motorcycle insurance is relatively cheap.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
I'm only 22 myself and fortunately my first years insurance as an 18 year old was just under £1000, and that was on a 4.5k car, guess its because i'm female and live in a low risk area.
Haven't really got a lot of advice apart from the only other way around it would be to take the insurance policy out in your name where additional drivers can also earn NCD etc? Not sure if it would change things, I know people are saying that its a decent quote but I couldn't bear to pay more for insurance than I did for the car0 -
unfortunately you will NOT get cheap insurance for a 17 yr old theses days
partial blame to 17 yr old reputation
main blame is where there's a blame there's a bloo.. good £3000+ claim coming my way brigade !0 -
That isnt a bad price, im 27, got a 1 ltr corsa 56 plate and that cost me £1300. The fact that your son has a bigger engine and si younger makes me think you have a decent price.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
