    Hi,

how come the day 46492 is an E (est) when night 15619 is C (Cust)?
This can occur when the reading does not fit with the read history. Given the big jump in the day reading in a month, this would support that view.

welshblackhorse do you have a previous bill were both readings are A or C that you can post the readings from?

I'm curious about the rates quoted, the saving between day and night seems pretty minimal. Is that normal for ECO7?

It's not normal ime, the differential between day and night is very low. The rates a few years ago were typically night being 1/3rd day rate, but these days, it's more like night being 1/2 day rate.

I've recently left BGas, because they put my rates up almost 40% (when their rates went up 9% I think they said!), but if I had stayed, I would be paying about 14p day rates (tier two!) and 8p night rates - I know that because yesterday they rang me up with that 'offer' trying to tempt me back.

The ops day rate seems exceptionally low to me post the recent rise - maybe he's nearing the end of an old fixed rate. I wonder if he could recheck the tariff rates?

If those readings are correct it would appear to show that you've used nearly 8000kWh of electricity since May or 5000 since Nov but as that is an estimate it would seem to be less reliable.

If the meter is away from the house is it possible that something else is being run through it that you are not aware of? 8 security lights at 500W each would burn 4kW for every hour they are on and this time of year that could be up to 18 hours a day if triggered by the light levels. That would equate to £10 per day @ 14p per kwh so potentially much more than your £200 per year estimate as December alone would be £300 and well over 2000kWh of electricity for the month.

If those lights are on anything like that number of hours then at a stroke they explain the consumption of 8000kWh since May.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • hi, I have just noted a discrepancy which might explain some of this.
On the 28/10/11 on my bill the actual day reading says
    49872
but on the bill for 30/11/11 which is for some unknown reason an estimate the day reading is 46492 so unless my metre has been going backwards ( I wish ) it appears to be a billing mistake on their part.
if I take my recent read of 30/12 day reading 51187 C and the reading of 28/10 49872 C in approximately 60 dys ?
i have used 1,315 kwh around 22 kwh per day
  • hi jimjames, the security lights arnt movement or light sensitive ,they are on a couple of hours at night at most, its in a dressage arena for horse riders and has a manual switch so I dont think its that. Of course during the summer mon ths they arnt used at all but we do have up to ten caravans here in the summer so I would have expected to see a pretty even monthly usage.

Looking at all the readings you have posted the best 2 sets to use are:

    actual ( A) reading 15/07/2011
    night 13813
    day45059

    and

    meter reading 30/12
    night 15695 C
    day 51187 C

That means in 35 weeks you have used 1882kwh at night rates and 6128kwh at day rates. Looking at these figures if you are on an E7 tariff then I suggest you are on the wrong tariff.

Given that you say you light a dressage arena during the winter (several thousand watts of lightening - do you know the power and number of bulbs) and supply 10 caravans during the summer I would say this not undreasonable.

  • hi Spiro, thanks for your input. I am finally getting my head around all this.
I dont know what size the bulbs are in the floodlights, they are the bog standard B&Q type and there are 8 of them, not expensive to buy and as there is a metre,so I suppose it pays for itself.
I think I will have to contact BG and point out their mistake, the bill will have to be re calcualted then. Amazingly and annoyingly they were holding over £1,000 in credit !!Money that should have been in my bank.

  • hi Spiro, on my statement they have the readings for 30/11 as 46492 and on the 28/10 as 49872 . Cant be right can it, nothing about an elctricity bill gets less !?
