I love the tiers of cup cakes: Lets face it, how many people actually like wedding cake? )

I dont think i would go for the choc fountain myself, mainly because i think alot of ladies maybe warey of runny chocolate and new posh clothes.

  • Hi, I have a small choc fountain and imo I would say that it's not a fab idea for a wedding esp if there will be children there.
We set mine up for a friends house warming and it was great, everybody knew exactly where their kids were all night (at the fountain) however we had to take it in turns to oversee what was happening so the choc didn't turn into a gloopy mess. The kids were covered in choc, and loved every minute but unless you are prepared to pay the very expensive prices to get a company to run it all night for you then it's not worth it and at those prices it's definately not worth it. Personally I'd go for one of those gorgeous chocolate wedding cakes instead, but then I can't cos' I'm not getting married and the rest of the Murphy's no more pies club might get a bit cross with me for breaking my diet:rolleyes:

My MIL made the wedding cake and then we paid for it to be professionaly iced; didn't work out too expensive at all.

As for fountains, i've heard horror stories about these ie the left over chocolate is left in the fountain and reheated for he next party eeeewww!! So you could be getting someone elses hair and other bits in your choccy. Also the amount of oil they pour in to keep the chocolate smooth and flowing (don't need dodgy belly on wedding night or before jetting off somewhere!!)

I've never used one and these may just be urban myths, but it has put me off. If i had one i'd have to insist on seeing the fountain been set up and watching them open NEW chocolate to add in!

I went to a party with a chocolate fountain, but I didn't like it. The chocolate was sickly sweet and tasted like cheap chocolate. I only had 2 things dipped in the fountain and that was enough for me.

That's not like me, as I can scoff huge quantities of quality chocolate like Green & Blacks etc., without feeling sick :o

If you are picky about chocolate like me, make sure you get to test what you will be eating before you hire the fountain.

I made my own fruit cake, and iced it myself, and got loads of compliments on it. There was another wedding party on in the hotel, and both parties were mingling in the foyer with their cakes and coffees after the meals. Two little girls from the other party came and asked if they could have some of my cake, then went and told the other bride that my cake was better than her cake - ooops :o Thankfully she saw the funny side :D
Here I go again on my own....
  • If you're as messy as me, then a chocolate fountain and a white dress would not be a good mix!! :rotfl:

If you do have chocolate fountain, like the above poster said, use good chocolate or it can taste greasy and sickly.

That's what I thought!! We had about 30 kids invited to our wedding and the thought of sticky choccy fingers and my dress was too much to worry about, let alone the thought of me dripping it down my dress!!! :o

We went for M&S cake and everyone loved it and asked who made it!! :D

To dress it up we put iced flowers on top bought from a lady on ebay who does it as a hobby.

Sorry but I think chocolate fountains are passe now:o ,.... not a choclate fountain, they are sooooo common!:p

I have to agree. Four or five years ago they were quite a classy in thing, although I never attended a wedding where they replaced the cake, more a sort of novelty between the wedding breakfast and the evening buffet. Now every Tom, !!!!!! and Sally are having them IMO they are chavvy and will soon go the way of the champagne fountain. Who has them anymore? LOL

Wedding cakes are great, keep the top tier for your first childs christening cake, taste great, I'm sure you can find a relative somewhere who's a whizz at them so will keep the cost down.

I'm with the negatives on the chocolate fountain, too kitsch I'm afraid, even more so since I saw the residue in one a while ago - yuk yuk yuk.

Just had another idea! If you still don't want a traditional wedding cake, how about having the French version! Thats a big HUGE cone made up of profiter rolls topped with spun sugar instead of chocolate (personally I think I'd have both!) I can't remember what the proper name for it is but any cake maker will know what you are talking about, although not particually cheap (all those eggs! Not to mention the cream!) but it could work as both a wedding cake & a dessert to cut costs on the meal. Not many people in the UK have this but it really does have the WOW! factor:D

    HTH;)

Issue number one with cake... I am the only person in my family who bakes... AT ALL. My nan used to but she's infirm and in a nursing home so sadly not able to help... That means if the cake is to be made it will be by ME :) And with so much other stuff going on I'd just panic at the thought of making my own cake...
