we had a chocolate wedding cake and it was delish. we had a 16" chocolate fudge cake, a 14" chocolate marble cake and a 12" ark chocolate cake. and it was decorated with white chocolate and malteasers. it was really lovely and cost £300 off a local lady who does it at home.

  • I would definetly have a nice cake!

  • I had a massive chocolate cake - it had a seashore theme and was covered in white and pale green chocolate - the same firm now does a lot of the celeb cakes - guests had it instead of dessert so it was still cost effective as well as giving a wow factor - I bet someone has a friend/relative who could make you something really personal and lovely for a fraction of the cost of the ones you have seen.

Just one thing too - I am probably a traditionalist, but you can't cut a chocolate fountain!

No doubt, has to be wedding cake.
But make sure if doesn't go to waste by feeding your guest a huge pud and then expecting them to eat wedding cake. Maybe have the cake as pudding and then have fruit or cheeses.
  • Chocolate fountains are fun but also messy - guests have to queue up to have a go and chocolate gets dripped everywhere - on the floor and down peoples clothes!
  • I'd definitely go with the cake. Chocolate fountains can be just as expensive as a cake and what happens if your guests don't like chocolate? I'm going for a sponge cake from m&s.

  • It's called a croquembuche Lillibet - probably spelt wrongly!

Went to a wedding and they had a 'cheese cake' ! A cake with tiers made up of different sized cheeses!!! It made a statement, but I'm not sure what it was!
Also a friend of mine had an ice cream cake, each tier was covered in chocolate and had vanilla ice cream inside, nice, but it was a paon to cut and everyone ended up with just some melted ice cream and a few bits of chocolate.
I had a great 3 tier chocolate sponge, with chocolate cigar curls around each layer, 2 dark, middle one white choc, and each layer was covered with seasonal red berries - cherries, strawbs, red currants, respberries - it matched our wedding brilliantly and everyone loved it - if someone knows how to add pictures to these things let me know and I'll add one so anyone interested can have a nosy!

I would definately go with a cake. not only is it a photo opportunity when you cut it, but its also something you can send to people who couldnt make it to the wedding.

If you are doing it on a budget, then I would advise buy the 3 different sizes of the m & s iced cakes, and then hit ebay!! You can buy fancy 3 tier floating cake stands and the amount of people selling cake toppers and things is incredible and you would have lots of choice.

I bought my wedding cake as 3 seperate cakes, bought clear cake seperators and then bought a Roly Bear cake topper from my local Clintons. Sprinkled a little table confetti on the other tiers and viola!! I suppose it depends on how fancy or simple you want the cake to be.

Heres my wedding cake (and me and my hubby too!) - http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y73/g4-4ever/dt7.jpg
You're so very special, I wish I was special

I agree the fountain is a bit naff now. When they were new and not available to buy in Argos then it would have been cool but prob not now.

A relative of mine recently had tiers of individual fairy cakes which I think is a nice spin on a traditional wedding cake. Cheaper too. They were done by a professional on a special stand so had all the impact of a big cake.

Why dont you have a cheap wedding cake, and buy some of the mini chocolate fountains @ £15 each instead of the very large one and do it yourself, thats what i think im going to do!

lucky with the wedding cake - my uncle is a baker and its my wedding present!!
