Sky Box question...

Total newbie to Sky

We've got a sky dish for our apartment (Huge communal one)

Can I simply plug in a Sky box and watch the free channels?

In replace of a digibox thru the normal aerial?

Unfortunately for that you'll have to pay Sky to enable the recording function, even for the free channels. I believe it's £10 per month. To enable Sky+ properly you will need two feeds from the dish, with just one you can only record the channel you're watching/currently tuned to.
  • if you have a communal dish you may not be able to get sky+ - it requires 2 feeds from the dish to your house and you may be limited to only 1 feed from the dish so you won't be able to get sky+

There is a workaround to enable Sky+ (SD) boxes to be used with one feed.

Sky HD boxes have a menu function to set them up with only one feed if only one is available.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    What is the work around?

    Or try this -
    * Make sure your sky cable is plugged into "Dish Input 1"
    * Press Services on your remote
    * Press Right-Arrow and highlight "Settings"
    * Press Down-Arrow and highlight "Picture"
    * Press 0, 1, Select
    * The "Setup" tab will now appear
    * Scroll down and select the "Single Feed Mode" option
    * Press the Right-Arrow and change it from 'OFF' to 'ON'
    * Press the Green Button to Save the settings
    * A 'Caution' message will appear... Press 'Select'
    * Your system will now switch-off/reboot
    * Leave it for a couple of minutes
    * Press the Sky button to bring it back to life

geordie ben - that work around still means you'll need £10 per month to record stuff though...
  • Or try this -
That is the method for HD boxes only and is not available on the SD Sky+ boxes
