Need help selling my car

Im new so bare with me....

I bought a 1.1 Citroen Saxo, 03 plate in february 2011 and I believed that i could insure the car but obviously as being a young driver recently passing my test i can't afford insurance.

I am looking into selling the car and do not know how to go about it. I am aware that there are a number of ways to do it but i aren't sure which one is the best.
  1. Gumtree
  2. Ebay
  3. Classified ads
  4. Auctions
I know i have only listed a few and know there is more.

I have had the car serviced in the last 3 months so i am confident that there is nothing wrong with the car. What other things along the same lines will i need to do to interest potential buyers.

Any help please? :)

Im not sure if this a 'For Sale ' ad but if you are unable to sell your car on the sites you have mentioned then id be thinking scarp yard.. :rotfl:
  • Try the free ones first. Advertise at 10% higher than you expect to get and you will receive a fair price (buyers always negotiate). Be sure to mention "sold as seen" and get a signed bill of sale. Check approximate used values out via interweb. Give it a good clean inside and out to get the best possible price. Small, economical cars should sell quickly. Good luck :-)

You also need to be aware of the requirements for continuous insurance. You must either insure and tax the vehicle if kept on the road or a SORN declaration if not. As you seem to have owned the vehicle since Feb last year you may be aware of this already (or just lucky not to have got caught yet).

    http://www.mib.org.uk/Motor+Insurance+Database/en/Continuous+Insurance+Enforcement/default.htm

Other sales options are Autotrader, the good old 'notice in the window' (just make sure it's easy to read) and do the phone number and price so it can be seen from a passing vehicle, card in your local post office or supermarket noticeboard & local paper.

You shouldn't have any trouble selling locally as it's a cheap to run car rather than diving in and doing the national (and expensive) sales campaign on Ebay or Autotrader. Finally if you can find a car that you can insure there's always the posibility of part exchange if the seller agrees.

As i found out on my renewal driving other cars now excludes any vehicle not currently insured.

So many potential buyers probably wont be covered either.

Is the car modified in any way? This limits your market.

The market is flooded with these cars, does not help with the free insurance deals they gave out years ago. It will sell, though you may need to out price every other saxo in the area.

No, it hasnt been touched at all. I made sure of this before buying it because it would be foolish to buy a modified car.

Thanks for the posts... really helped me to get started! :T

The obvious effect is that you can't offer anyone a test drive on the public highway - even if they have insurance of their own, it won't make it legal to drive it.

That may seriously affect the confidence of any buyer, unless the price is right.

You won't be able to tax it without first getting insurance for it.

I am looking at getting my mum to get insured on it for a month so its running perfectly so i will be able to get it taxed then. hopefully it won't have too much of an affect on the buyer.

Only if the cars in your mums name. Seen a fair few people turned away from the local DVLA office who were trying to tax a vehicle
    registered in someone elses name.

They said they must apply for the logbook or put it into their name 1st.
