Only if the cars in your mums name. Seen a fair few people turned away from the local DVLA office who were trying to tax a vehicle
    registered in someone elses name.

They said they must apply for the logbook or put it into their name 1st.
It is actually possible for someone to insure a car if they are not the registered keeper - not all insurance companies will offer it though.

The car is in my mums name but so thats not an issue. Is it a big deal that the car doesn't have tax to potential buyers?

Well think of it as £60 that will sway around the price. Sometimes people just want a ready to go car...

A buyer wouldn't legally be able to drive the car away without tax. They might decide to risk it but I wouldn't these days. It just takes one ANPR camera to catch you and you're screwed!
