Thats what you need. Hydrochloric acid based. Bleach only kills the bacteria that cause the stain /smell. This removes the limescale that provides the habitat for the bacteria.
We had the stain and smell in the bowl which bleach 'cured' for maybe 24 hrs then it returned. Get this ' paint it on carefully , leave a few minutes then rinse. repeat once more if necessary. Sorted

If you get a toilet brush and use it like a plunger (or use a plunger if you have one), you can push the water beyond the U bend.
Just build up a rhythmic movement of the brush back and forth to get in sync with the water to help push more of it round the U-bend
  • Fit an electronic scale inhibitor like this or similar on the incoming water main. Not only will it prevent scale build up but will remove any existing scale in a few weeks. We fitted one 15 years ago and no limescale problems since

    Oh, please.
The only water softeners that work are chemical based and none of these 'magic bean' solutions do any good at all, except for the wallets of the sellers.

Who said the electronic things are Water Softeners ?:rotfl:What they do is change the electrical charge on particles of CaCO3. in suspension so that they do not form a hard deposit on pipe and sanitary ware surfaces. They do not soften water, but do prevent the build up of lime scale . When we moved into our new house 15 years ago we started getting scale build up on the flush area at the back of the WC pans, fitting one of these removed the scale and has prevented further encrustation ever since .

So how do you explain why our heat exchanger completely furred up with limescale, even though the central heating installers fitted one of those scale inhibitors! I've had 2 plumbers and a Worcester Bosch heating engineer all say they are rubbish and don't do anything and the only way to solve limescale build up is to have a proper water softener fitted. It certainly never worked with our house and I definitly wouldnt recommend them and it surprises me that anyone would!

I have no knowledge of your system so cannot advise you why you have a problem. For us it has been a satisfactory solution to the problem and we live in the Thames Valley where the water comes from wells in the chalk aquifer and is officially catagorised as hard.

Before I had a water softener installed (last year - new house) I used off the shelf products from supermarkets which cleared lime scale build up. I put a third of the bottle in the bowl and left it overnight. Any supermarket in hard water areas will have them - just ask.

Now I don't have to worry as my toilet bowls and sinks are sparkling because I installed the water softener. There is the outlay naturally and I finish paying for mine next month (interest free through Harveys). It also protects washing machines from long term damage and you don't need salt in the dishwasher either.
