How to avoid toilet pan stainining from hard water

We live in a hard water area and we seem to have some grey/yellowish water staining on the inside of our 3 year old Toilet pan.

We bought the new build property about 3 years ago and I'm wondering if the problem is with the cheap materials (toilet pan) they us throughout the build or if this is a hard water issue.

Ps - this is not a poo staining issue :D
Any ideas?

  • Hi,

I also live in a hard water area so can sympathise.

There are a number of approaches you can take...
(listed from gentle to harsher methods!)

    1. Denture cleaning tablets - add a couple to the bowl, leave over night, rub with cloth next morning and flush.
    2. Use toilet brush up and down to remove most the water from the bowl, pour in a 2litre bottle of coca cola (any brand). Leave over night, scrub and flush next morning.
    3. Lower the water level as approach 2. Then boil a kettle of one third white vinegar, one third water (this will clean the lime scale from your kettle too!) and pour into bowl. Leave for 10-15 minutes. Scrub and flush.
    4. Borax - hard to get hold and toxic of but apparently works. Mixed with lemon juice into a paste and applied to bowl (water removed before).

    Happy cleaning!

Harpic Power Plus should do the job quite nicely (and is currently on offer at Sainsbury's at 99p) it's full of fairly nasty stuff though so I tend to not use it too often (about once a year for the "newer than new" shine; the rest of the time I just spray some white vinegar)

I used to remove scale from the loo by leaving a soda crystal solution in there overnight and scrubbing the next morning.

Once it's gone you can keep it away by using some kind of continuous loo cleaner. Poundland sell some blue Kiwi branded things that go in the tank and last ages.

So this staining isn't permanent then?

No its just limescale and will come off with the right treatments its just a case of trial and error, I use toilet duck but the scale only comes off if I scrub with the pad and them leave it in the pan to soak overnight..

My vote is for Harpic Power Plus too. Excellent stuff.

  • Fit an electronic scale inhibitor like this or similar on the incoming water main. Not only will it prevent scale build up but will remove any existing scale in a few weeks. We fitted one 15 years ago and no limescale problems since

  • We had the most disguisting staines on our toilet when we moved in and tried everything (including most of the suuggestions above) but nothing worked.

Eventually came across 'spirit of salts' (Robert Dyas), which I think is Hydrochloric acid. It is lethal and but worked like a miracle; just pour it in, and every 5 mins slosh it about a bit (dont breath the fumes as they are horrendous). Toilet will be like new

ps. my apologies to Captain Planet but this is the only thing that will work!

Hydrochloric acid is the stuff in Harpic Power Plus, hence why I only use it when I do the big spring clean ;)

Fair enough, but this stuff is seriously strong- I would guess that the concentration of it would be far, far stronger than anything available 'off the shelf'.
