Toys have age appropriate ranges for a reason, the term choking hazard comes to mind. I'd be furious if someone gave my soon to be first born age inappropriate gifts. A polite but firm "please dont get my child toys he could choke on" should be sufficient to make her cop on.

I don't understand the people saying "buy her child something rubbish", it isn't the other child's fault his mum is gift-recycling without thought!

OP, if you have space keep the gifts, if you don't have space give the gifts to charity or ebay them. Buy your nephew something nice if you want to, or don't buy him anything. If it is a real issue you could speak to your sister, but I would think that more hassle than it is worth.

I don't think I've ever been given a gift which made me "furious", though I'd be rather angry if I was giving a gift to someone who wasn't simply grateful for the gift. As a parent, if your child gets given an age inappropriate gift, don't let them play with the toy.

Ultimately my childs safety is more important than someone elses hurt feelings. If someone is going to be angry that I wasnt grateful for an inappropriate gift then I'm not bothered.

And to take it to an extreme Antonia1 if I gifted your child an "Adult Toy" would you be grateful for the gift or would you be more inclined to say something and risk making me angry that you werent simply grateful? I'm not trying to bait you or start a flame war but where do you draw the line? Age inappropriate is age inappropriate any which way you slice it.

We had a similar situation with our youngest and because I didn't want to appear ungrateful or cause a fuss I just put the gifts away for him to grow into - it wasn't an issue because he was too young to realise.

It did however become a bigger issue when at 2 years old he given a marble maze (age 4+) that we just couldn't let him use even though he was desperate for it - he just loved putting things into his mouth too much. We had a very tense Christmas day because as a stubborn two year old he would not be distracted from his cousins gift 'the big boy toy'.

I disliked age inappropriate gifts when my daughter was a baby, but said thankyou and put them away until she was bigger. she's just grown into lego and micromachines so some of her christmas gifts came from Grandpa's loft, out of boxes belonging to my husband and both of his brothers. some of these toys are from the late 1970s/early80s and she LOVES them.

I now dislike ones that are age inappropriate for being too YOUNG for her. I've already passed on a couple of this years xmas gifts to a smaller little girl we know (my daughter's best friend's little sister in fact).

Gifts are not a right. your son is too young to realise what's going on. let him play in the wrapping paper and store the gifts for later use!

I would say "thanks for the present but you do know I will have to put it away for the next 4 years"!

She's not even being smart about the recycling. I mean come on at least make sure the gift matches the child.
