No, and I would myself not answer such queries other than in terms of 'high' and 'heavy'. Let them work out the details from the time and location using their own data sources which they will undoubtedly have. Basically, I think the purpose of the questions is to trip you up if you say 'low' and 'none' as it will look like lack of maintenance which is uninsurable.

Try the Met Office website, they may keep records of previous days/weeks weather. I'm sure the insurance companies would use an official resource such as the MetO

Thanks for reply, reason I am asking is I want to know myself before speaking to them, I know they will check but want to know they are giving me correct information when they do.

Unfortunately had to make a claim just over a month ago (re roof) they said it was not covered as not storm damage because wind speed was just below what they consider a storm and rain fall less than their minimum too. Had to get roof repaired & pay for ourselves which we did, now we have another leak in a different place but weather was bad again last night so wondering if could be storm damage this time.

Not looking good, sounds like roof is in need of major maintenance and one failed claim already will have alerted them.

Did they send an engineer out the last time? I hope they didn't then at least you have an argument it was the wind and not lack of maintenance.

Thanks, Yes they surveyed it and told us what needed to be done, we had st send them proof we had got the repairs done, which we did.

They only said they would redocorate the landing ceiling and that had to wait till we had roof done and provided them with copy of invoice to prove it had been repaired.

We did all this & because of Christmas/New year the first date the decorators could start work was today, they arrived early this morning and that's we we noticed another leak, opposite end of the landing to where it happened before.

Have only managed to find out wind speeds for last 6 hours on the met office site, speeds of up to 30mph but gusts of up to 51mph, does anyone know if the gusts count as I think they said last time wind had to be more than 45mph to consider it a storm.
  • Try Weather Underground. It does a comprehensive weather history. Here's a link to the history for my local official weather station: http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/EGMH/2012/1/3/DailyHistory.html?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA. You should be able to change the location at the top of the page. Then scroll down towards the left hand bottom of the new page and you should find a link to the history and almanac section for your location. Any problems post where you live and I'll find the data for you.
  • good luck with this one. i suffered roof damage about 3 weeks ago after a very windy night. when i contacted my insurance company they came back with a met office report saying that winds were only recorded at 37mph in my postcode that night. (i definitely think it was much fiercer than that).
they only class storm damage as above 45mph apparently (may be different from company to company?)

Please let us know whether you have any luck with this one - I had a leak a few months ago from the lead channel above our bedroom window (1930's style house). Didn't know about weather stuff then. Insurance co said was a maintenance thing, so we have had a temporary repair done until we can afford to have it done properly.

Today I woke up to find the other lead channel is leaking! Could cry!

The builder who did the repair last time said that we may need a whole new roof and so it wouldn't be worth repairing that bit properly. We've only lived here a year, and the homebuyers report didn't pick that up so this has come as a bit of a shock!

    Bloomin' Roof!
