I'm veggie, but I think I am addicted to cheese! Its certainly my major downfall, and the thing I crave most, but its so fattening. I really wish I could stop it but have no idea how. Need a cheese addicts annonymous or something!

I agree whole heartedly, I think all savoury dishes should be smothered in cheese ;)

Thank you everyone for the advice so far. I do know the basics and a bit more about being healthy it is just finding ways to make healthy eating more interesting and varied so I am not tempted to just go and eat my body weight in chocolate :rotfl:

Weight Watchers is effective in general (I lost 9 or 10 lb in two months last year).
I don't understand, though, how if you're a 'proper' vegetarian (as opposed to a pizza and chips vegetarian) you could have got to be overweight in the first place...unless you've been overdoing it on the cheese and chocolate?

May be not the exact words but that's how the post comes across to me, I was a proper veggie and put weight on, lost weight and the same when I started eating meat again.

I was veggie when I was a weight watchers leader, i don't really eat meat now, really only when some one else is cooking.

Balance and moderation helps, avoid pastry (if I could take my own advice I would be 3 stone thinner!:rotfl:),

Weight watchers online has some fab recipes, I think you need a lot of variation and not be afraid to swap ordinary ingredients for veg. Experiment and have fun!
  • You would still need to eat a hell of a lot of cheese to cause you to be greatly overweight.

I know someone who used to live on junk food & a full blown meat eater, they were/still are loads slimmer than I am, but I would bet that I'm a whole lot healthier than they are.

It's so easy to blame weight gain purely on eating &/or not doing enough exercise. In fact, it almost seems fashionable to blame weight gain on eating too much, not doing enough exercise. There are many other factors, after all we are all individuals & what works for some may not work for others.

Oh I have actually started on a meal planner for my family to help save money this year and stop us getting fed up of eating the same veggie meals over and over (they rnt veggie but I am and so they are 9 times out of 10 happy to have veggie family dishes). I have posted them below they may help give you some ideas. (all the meats mentioned are quorn versions of btw)

Crazy quiche & chips - this is quiche without a pastry crust, you do need to add some flour into the mix.

Mushroom stroganoff - made with rice, mushroom soup and quorn chicken

Butternut squash bake - slow cooker one, rice, carrots, onions, stock cube and diced butternut squash. I add gravy at the end.

Japanese vegetable pancakes - from the good food website :D

    Creamy tomato pasta and chicken

    Sausage and mash

Falafel burgers- So yummy! Find it on the good food website too :)

    Spaghetti Bolognese

Mexican wraps - we use quorn mince, salsa and some fajita granules. YUMMY!

    Chilli con carne

    Shepards pie

    Pasta bake

    Vegetable & dumpling soup

H/M Pie & chips - ok so pastry isnt great and the chips can be traded for mash but we stack our pie full of veg! So I don't mind that the pastry isnt 100% a healthy option

    Spinach and Ricotta gnocci

Greek style pie - another good food idea :) but again the pastry may not be what u want. Im a believer of all in moderation so just dont have too many fatty options a week

Potato, ricotta and spinach tart (so just pastry lined dish, no pastry on top) & chips/mash

    Butternut squash and sage risotto

h/m pizza night - I often do my pizza base topped in beans and quorn chicken to avoid cheese :)

Spinach and ricotta cannelloni - yet again the good food site does a version you can make yourself and freeze the leftovers :)

Sausage hotpot - made with sausages, onions and as many different types of beans as you would like including baked beans and a can of chipped tomatoes. Whack in some herbs and yum!

It would be lovely if we could stop debating the causes of weight gain and focus on healthy well balanced meals and sharing hints and tips for making our fav foods a bit better for us. This is mean to be a positive thread :D

Damn it LilMissEmmylou I'm hungry now!! :D

I make those falafal burgers as well, soooo good!

My problem is I make a lot of food all at once (if I open a tin of tomatoes, I use it all etc) rather than freeze portions, so I eat healthy things, but end up having like 3 people's worth :o:o:o

I'm terrible for picking at biscuits and cake at work, I never have them in the house but offered some every day at work, with a lot of peer pressure. Also the coffee there is DIRE so I add sugar :( Need go back on the black tea :)

Taram I am exactly the same - I am super healthy but my portions are massive.

Might I suggest Hugh Fernly-Whatshisname (river cottage) new book - Veg everyday, loads of nice recipes and normal ingredients.

Made a squash (roasted), mushroom, puy lentil and spinach salad yesterday, sounds boring but had a honey and mustard dressing with it which was amazing.

I have been cutting down on dairy - if you think about it milk is what mum's use to fatten up kids, I am also a bit freaked out by breast feeding from another species but that's a separate topic.....dont want to start a debate! ;)

I have reserved this at the library, is it good? Only saw the last episode of the series but the recipes he had on them seemed straight forward enough and tasty.
