Yes haggle, walk away, go back, haggle again.
It works, they want your money.

A lot say it is a lot of hassle getting rid of your old car, but think on, the difference could be £1500 if the old car sells well and you haggle a discount for no PX, then think on £1500 of take home pay, how much hassle was that to earn ?
You can sort the old car out in half a day, you dont earn £1500 in half a day.
Dealers dont really want your old car, its hassle sending it to the auction, they would rather have a simple cash transaction.
looking at the prices they have a good 4k mark up on over auction prices, so they should haggle.

To be honest we've only considered the S Max and the VW Touran so far, is the Toyota worth a look too?

Is it worth a look ????????
Its the one to buy, you should be able to get yourself a one year old 2.0d Verso TR with 4 years manufacturers warranty still remaining for around £15k
I bought a new one 18mth ago, not one bit of bother, 50mpg, smooth quiet and fantastically easy to drive.
    And no DPF :T

I used to own a (Corolla) Verso. Nothing wrong with it, but it is quite a bit smaller than an S Max.

I think Toyota dropped a bolllock when they stopped making the Avensis Verso, which was S Max sized.

(The least said about the Yaris Verso the better.)

Another thought, is there a specific reason you need an MPV over, say a Mondeo Estate as most of the space in an MPV is above you. Makes it nice and airy but a bit useless for storing things...

58 plate so about 3 years old, 19K mileage = ~6000 miles per year
59 plate so about 2 years old, 29K mileage = ~15000 miles per year

The first car has done far too few miles for a modern diesel engine, probably only used for pottering around town, chances are it will have never run a DPF regeneration cycle so that will be all nicely clogged up and about to fail leaving you a bill of over a grand to sort out.

The second car is a much safer bet. at 15K per year it's probably seen a few motorway runs to get the DPF up to temperature and sorted out. For a difference of under £500 on a 12K car I'd go for the second, in short.

    Better seats
    Better engine
    Newer car
    Less risk of DPF failure
    Still some OEM warranty left??

If you really hate the leather seats, I'm sure you could find someone willing to swap them for cloth seats plus cash.

    What is DPF?

    Thanks.

Correct but unless there a real need for something that big, the Verso and its 7 seats is big enough. :)
  • Thanks everyone for your input.

We want an MPV as we are planning for another baby later this year, + our pram takes up so much room in the boot of our current car, we think an MPV is the best option.

OH is taking the 2.0 S MAx on a test drive at lunchtime, and we are going to reject the one they are pushing us on with the leather seats. I think we will definitely go for the 2 litre version if we choose the S Max, it'll just be a caseof waiting for another one to become available.

Thanks for the milage advice Lum We'll look for something around the 30k mark. I'd not even considered DPF so thanks for the tip!

Will also see if we can get in to have a look at the Toyota. The What Car website mentioned that it wasn't particularly roomy inside though..? We are looking for something that will comfortably ferry 2 kids about + grandparents from time to time so want something spacious. We'll check it out though.

  • ...just one other thing.

It seems that the S Max does not come with a spare wheel.

I thought all cars did..? What are you supposed to do if you have a blow out somewhere??
