I have also the dilemma of her possessions as I am renting out her property. Storing them is a short term solution with a cost, and I'm not even sure if I can sell/dispose of them! Obviously personal things will be kept by the family until such time that we can legally make a decision.

We're in the same boat - there are boxes and bags all around the house of Grandad's things and we are in the process of trying to sort things in to things he's likely to request/want, things that are no good and things to go to the charity shop. There are other things that we think the family will want when the time comes so we also have to keep them safe.

Yes. I have PoA for my mother. She has full mental capacity but is no longer able to produce a signature to sign cheques, her speech is very diffcult to understand (you need to be right next to her and have her repeat her sentences) and can't hear well enough to speak to her bank on the phone. Whilst she can communicate her decisions to anyone in the same room as her, she can no longer manage her finances (signing cheques etc) and I have PoA registered with her bank and sign cheques on her behalf.

PoA is not just for the mentally incapacitated!

The "old" enduring power of attorney could be combined with simple power of attorney on the same form. So with a bit of luck the attorney could soldier on as the donor became increasingly incompetent.

Unfortunately there were a number of fraudsters prepared to exploit this situation and this is probably why we are lumbered with the "new" lasting power of attorney that has to be registered in advance of need and costs hundreds of pounds more than the 75 pence that the old system cost me to get signed - and was never registered.or used legally.

I have POA for my father. I haven't kept any receipts. Ocassionaly I take petrol. I just buy him what he wants from HIS money. As far as I'm concerned, it's not Social Services money yet, and if they challenge me they'll have to take a running jump! I have MS and was medically retired, so I'm living on benefits now (first time I've claimed, worked since I was 16) They can't have what I don't have!
    I Believe in saving money!!!:T
