Weekend in Edinburgh - What should I fit in?

OK, I've been very proactive and just booked a weekend in Edinburgh, Easter Saturday to Easter Monday, for my OH's 40th Birthday. Flights have been booked along with a hotel right in Edinburgh city centre (with views of Edinburgh Castle, hurrah!).

Anyway, OH loves good food so I was going to book a nice retaurant for lunch on Sunday, a couple with good reviews on Tripadvisor are Castle Terrace and Wedgwood. Anyone have views on these or anything better?

And, as the title suggest, what do we fit in while we're there? Edinburgh Castle? The Playhouse?

Any recommendations taken on board. Want to fit in as much as feasibly possible. Am excited already and it's 3 months away ...

Castle Terrace is a sister restaurant to Tom Kitchin's restaurant The Kitchin in Leith and recently awarded a Michelin Star in October.

You wouldn't go far wrong with either but I would suggest you book early.

I was going to book The Kitchin but it's not open Sunday or Monday! Thanks for the heads up about booking early. I'm glad I booked the flights early, as Easyjet already had a warning sign saying there were only 3 seats left on the flight I wanted.

    Can you recommend anything else?

we did love the zoo when we went for a few days at easter. Also now they have the two pandas that would be really interesting.

Also the two museums in the city centre (museum of edinburgh and museum of scotland I think) were well worth a visit

I love the tour bus in Edinburgh, you can get on and off where you like, that sort, but there it seems worth it.

I love Royal Mile, the childhood museum, there is another good social museum as well. THen there is the underground close part (forgotten name, but just off Royal Mile), the new parliament building etc, and the shops behind Princess Street.

Witchery at the Castle is a restaurant that I continue to not be able to dine in, but excellent reputation.

    What hotel have you booked?

I had a feeling that The Kitchin was closed on Sunday's when I linked to it.

    Can recommend...

and for the funniest ghost tour try

The open topped bus tour ticket lasts for 24 hours and as said above you can hop on and off, handy because it goes to all the tourist spots where often "normal" buses don't go.

National Museum of Scotland is excellent and free, but to do it justice you need at least half a day. We were there for three hours last week and barely touched what it has to offer.

The castle is now run and administered, for the most part, by Historic Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government. It undertakes the dual, and sometimes mutually contradictory, tasks of operating the castle as a commercially viable tourist attraction, while simultaneously having responsibility for conservation of the site.

Technically correct but it's also a working military garrison...neither of these posts help the OP.

Have a look at The List online and it will give you lots of reviews and what's on and it's normally pretty accurate.

I like a wander around Morningside and the Museum of Modern Art and a wander down the Water of Leith. But then I live here...

I love the idea of dining in the castle, however, the restaurant has very mixed views on Tripadvisor. It was through them that I found out about Wedgwood and Castle Terrace. These restaurants were featured in their top 10. OH loves food (and wine) so want to go somewhere he'll remember!

I'm happy to walk around Edinburgh and do the typical bus tour. Funnily enough, wouldn't dream of doing a London bus tour but, then, maybe that's because I live so near the damn place!

Is Edinburgh Castle worth a daytime visit? I normally love venturing round a castle. Went to Dover Castle in October and loved it.

Oooh, just visited its website. Looks lovely. Definitely worth a wander after lunch.
