  • Ahhhhhh .....

I'm with DH ... try not to worry about it too much and - at least there are 2 wages so if the worst did happen, you could cut back on everything to the absolute bare basics and survive for a few months (my worries mainly stem from just having the one wage coming in and knowing I'd be absolutely errrrr *rude word* if / when it does happen).

Unfortunately the days of permanent jobs being exactly that are a thing of the past and they can now be gone just as easily as temp ones - really the only thing the perm benefits you with is things like mortgages etc (as you would still be entitled to things like redundancy pay / other employment benefits even if you were temp, depending on time you've been there).

Of course it wouldn't be fun .. but you would get a new job & be fine

Personally (and I know others won't agree) - I'd not worry too much about overpaying the mortgage too much at first - and certainly until you've got your emergency fund etc to a level you're comfortable with.

Yes, you'll save a bit of interest - but how much does that compare with what you'd be getting with it being in savings?

It obviously depends on the sums involved but I worked out how much a small OP to my mortgage would be (rounding it up from £277 to £300 each month) and it cut 2 years off.

Great - but we're talking 29 years away  so - for me, it's better going to the emergency fund just now and maybe trying to do a bit of OP in a couple of years time (hopefully!)

It it's in an ISA, it would still be available to use for a mortgage payment if needed.

We all wobble :) .... it's actually good to wobble ;) as it means you'll keep an eye on things and make sure budgets are stuck to etc.

Thanks for posting that :) I know I'm probably worrying too much about things I can't really control - will ponder your ideas re: overpaying vs savings :)

Blimey I hadent realised what a wee gang of worriers we all are.
A permanant job is as permanant as it can be & thats it.
Dont worry about OP on your mortgage just yet.
Dont be so hard on yourself.

    Okay :o

Both me and DH are off ill today - we've both got upset stomachs. DH is still in bed and I'm on the sofa having a cuppa. I have a feeling we're both going to be ill on my birthday :(

In MSE news, no spending today! ;)
