Dialling 999 on a foreign mobile in the UK... do you get through?

    OP: Advise your visitors to call 999 or 112. It'll work fine.

    And people, please don't go 'test calling' the emergency services - here or abroad! Only call in the event of an emergency - the clue is in the name. :wall:

    I understand that it's actually acceptable practice to dial 999 for a test call. This is a particular necessity when a new phone system is installed with outgoing call restrictions. Often the installer dials 999 to make sure that callers can dial 999 when all other calls are restricted. If such a test is not carried out, it could cost lives. When testing 112 or 999, you should never hang up when you hear the ringing tone. You must state to the operator that it's a test, otherwise they will believe it's a genuine emergency which could waste valuable resources.
