I had a Tomtom, was great, but died after 2 years of use...
I looked at a new Tomtom, and the Garmin, and in the end decided against spending another £100 for 2 years use, bought the tomtom app for my smartphone (£50), a charger and a windscreen holder thing (£10) and as long as i buy this make of smartphone (which I probably will) I will have the working app - i may just need to change window holder every 2 years with upgrades...0 -
Another vote for the TomTom here. I've got an XL one (without the IQ routes unfortunately) and it's great. Very easy to follow instructions and quick at finding a signal. My dad has a Garmin and to be honest I think it's crap. Calculates very odd routes sometimes, takes ages to find a signal and to recalculate if you take the wrong turn in city (e.g. in the centre of Brussels it was a nightmare whereas my TomTom was much better).0

I've just bought the Garmin 1390T from Amazon for £99.99. Thats the cheapest I've seen it anywhere. Also bought lifetime mapping for £54.99 (again - cheapest I've seen it). I've never used Tom Tom so can't comment, but the Garmin is great.0

We like Garmin. Has been some debate recently about Tomtoms cutting back the range of their traffic advisory service. Also if you buy Garmin in Halfords, you can return it to them if it fails under warranty, I think Tomtom has to be sent back to the maker.
You can currently buy Garmin 1490T with traffic advisory, life time mapping, includes Europe AND Bluetooth for around £140-£1500 -
just sent the Tom Tom start 20 back to amazon for a refund as it packed up 3 months after buying it. Nothing on earth, in car charger or mains charger, would get it to turn on. I don't use it every day or every week so am not sure if this affects its reliability (don't see why it should).
Reviews for all satnavs are very mixed, so I would strongly suggest buying from a retailer like amazon, who will exchange or refund it if faulty within the warranty period without giving you aggro.
I need a new one too and am as confused as the OP. It must have good speed cameras Europe wide as I have 3 points on my licence from missing a temporary 50 zone on a motorway. Do any tom toms have temporary speed restriction camera alerts?
Edit: the reviews are very negative on the map updates. Early 2011 reviews say updating EU & UK maps wipes all your previous, manufacturer-installed maps and the new ones can be larger than the pre installed memory on the device, ergo no maps.... is this still the case with Tom toms? (I could not get the TT map update to work with my mac anyhow, although some techie said this could be because I was used a wifi connection whereas it only works if you use wired? Another odd TT problem). Don't know if Garmin has any such issues; just a few neg comments about bad directions and failure to read speed limits and cameras properly. I am talking the sub-£150 models of both makes.
Sub £100 the Tom Tom basic no 2 seller on amazon doesn't have GPS co-ordinate input, only can put in the street address, if that's important to you.0 -
Or get Google navigation for your Android phone and save yourself £100+
