Good afternoon all

Have been given £100 to buy a sat nav and I dont't now anything about tech stuff - just want a simple and reliable model. I know from friends that TomTom and Garmin are good ranges and so have narrowed it down to the below, but I'm just going round in circles now, please help with any reccomendations:
TomTom XL Western Europe Classic Sat Nav £99.99 at Halfords

TomTom XL IQ Routes Edition 2 EU Satellite Navigation System £105.99 at Amazon

Garmin Nuvi 1410 Sat Nav UK & ROI £99.99 at Halfords

Garmin Nuvi 1390 Traffic Satellite Navigation System with UK & European Mapping £99.99 at Amazon

Garmin Nuvi 1340 Widescreen Sat Nav with UK & Western Europe (22 Countries) £88 at Amazon

I'd be going with the XL with IQ Routes. I have the XL classic and it's a great Sat Nav, paying a tiny bit extra for IQ rotues must be worth it.

  • I have the XXL IQ Routes and I love it.
  • Just remember that TT will want money every year for traffic info, but if you buy a Garmin 't' model it will come with free traffic for life..ie 1390t, not 1390.

Other than that there's not a lot to choose between them.
  • another vote for tom tom here. i have the tomtom xxl iqroutes and love it.
  • I have a Tom Tom Go Live 1005 top of the range jobby and just to keep it updated they want around £50 a year for the live stuff (includes google etc.) and another £60 for 4 maps a year. Other makes are also not one time payments.

    Factor that in.

Also note that for some Tom Toms, you can, at the time of purchase, buy a 1 or 2 year update card for a fraction of the price of buying it when 12 months old.

Garmin do lifetime mapping updates for a one off payment of £75, but I purchased this upgrade from a company called Handtec for £53.

I'd definately say Tom Tom as I have found these are much better when you have to go off the planned route (or accidentally do so). You don't have to have the traffic info if you don't want to pay the upkeep on it.

Always found Garmins to be very good. There are however quite a lot of Tom Tom sheep out there
