thanks for your contributions so far. I now have a shortlist comprising of these cars
    1. 2001 Nissan Almera, 63000 miles on the clock. 4 previous owners from a trade seller. priced at 995 pounds.

    2. 2002 Ford Mondeo 95000 miles , 1 previous owner and going for 1000.

    3.1999 Honda Accord 90000 miles 2 previous owners @ 650 pounds.

According to the adverts they all have full service histories and petrol. MOT and tax not due at least october on the Mondeo.

I'd go for the mondeo all other things being equal, but see if you can have a drive and which one you prefer.

Mondeos have a consistent reputation for being rugged and reliable, with cheap and easily available spares. Although I normally prefer Japanese cars, if it was me I would probably got for the Mondeo.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I had a 2.0 manual n reg accord 10 or so years back, went from a 2.0 8v cav sri to it and the fuel economy on the accord was terrible, used about twice the petrol the cavalier did, sold it after 3 weeks, lost a few quid and bought a 2.0 16v cav gsi and even the economy on that was much better.
I've worked on a few almeras for friends and I rate them very highly except for them being prone to rust.
I had an 06 mondeo and would recommend one of those too but if its a diesel keep a good emergency fund as they are generally quite reliable but parts prices are pretty dear
