Best breed of dog for kids (under 10)??

  • you dont need to go with a particular breed really as said before it depends on the amount of time you have for the dog, size of garden, house etc.

Personally, i think staffordshire bull terriers are great, one of only 2 breeds i think which are mentioned as being good with children according to the kennel club - and plenty needing new homes :-)

I grew up with a lab who did try to bite me when i was little and pulled her tail - you cant really say any breed is 100% if a child accidently hurts a dog etc then a lot of dogs would react. Its just about being sensible and not leaving kids alone with the dog etc.

Without any doubt I would recommend a cavalier kings charles, having worked as a VN and having one myself they wouldnt hurt a fly infact mines scared of flies!

my grandma had one of these when i was little and it was very grumpy, we certainly knew not to go to close to her!

    Disgusting :mad::mad:!

    pardon me?

what on earth are you on about?

the kids play with the dog and he loves it.
however sometimes they want to play when he wants to sleep.
our dogue however, doesnt mind at all i.e. doesnt get aggressive in any way with the kids, he is very calm and good with children.

hardly animal cruelty is it ??

    some people....:o

But you said, and I quote: they torment the h*ll out of him and he doesnt mind a bit.

That is abuse to the dog!! How the hell do you know "he doesn't mind a bit"? Because so far he hasn't retaliated? What will you do when he does? Because one day he will if you allow your children to continue abusing him!!

Excuse me? You really think this is ok?

Poor dog... Irresponsible owner. Terrible kids.

I really didn't get the impression that PP's children were beating the dog with a metal pole or anything. I could say that my children "torment" my dog, but it would be a lighthearted, amusing way of saying that they probably annoy her at times. It happens. Even in the most responsible of homes.

This board really frustrates me. Throw away comments are taken so literally and seriously. Any excuse for some posters to get on their high horse and talk down to others.

I love animals. Love them. But really, is there any need to be so fanatical. Is there any need to be condescending and downright rude to people.

It seems this board is run by a clique of nuts and borderline animal hoarders who should, quite frankly, get over themselves.
  • Just come back from a work party , read the title and thought it said "Brest feeding dogs for kinds under 10" XD

OP when we were deciding we made a list

    Size of our house
    Size of garden
Amount of exercise (needed and able to give)
    Trainability
    Health issues
    Grooming/shedding
    Temperament

You get the gist :D Our house is simply not big enough to hold a lab with a swooshing tail..our garden is small so exercise is mainly outdoors away from the garden,I also grow a lot of veg etc so couldn't have a digger!
Youngest is autistic and had a real dog phobia until we worked with socialising him around them so although he loves dogs now he doesn't like being slobbered and being jumped up at so we had to get a more laid back/aloof breed..

In the end we chose a shar pei from a breeder as we knew their dogs well so could take our time choosing one that fitted us.

Rosie has been perfect for OUR family as she is aloof with strangers(totally ignores everyone even people she has met before) but some wouldn't like this in a dog..it suits US perfectly as she is not distracted from her duties with DS3.
When the boys/us come home she will greet us enthusiastically but with DS3 she sits (tail making a hole in the carpet!!) until he beckons her to say hello..she is very trainable too.

They are of a totally different attitude to most dogs and as I say she has been perfect for us (we are first time dog owners) but I can see why a lot of people rehome them after they lose their puppy cuteness as they could be construed as a 'difficult' breed, but as I say she is everything that WE wanted and more.:D

If you have young ones consider the time you have to devote to your new family member, get some breed books from your library when you get a shortlist and read up everything you can on them and also get the Perfect Puppy book that has been recommended on here as its really, really good.

Sorry for waffling :o but hope that helps a little
