Can I sell my mobile phone upgrade?

In February I am due to upgrade my phone and renew my contract for my mobile phone. I am with orange and can upgrade to an iPhone 4S 64GB White (this is the most valuable I think) for free.

Will I be able to sell the new iPhone? Would the iPhone need to be unlocked or anything?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this for me.

Yes, you can sell the phone, the contract relates to the sim card only. Regarding unlocking that is upto you, you can sell it locked to the network or you can pay the fee to Orange to have it unlocked before you sell it. Paying to have it unlocked may well turn out to cost more than leaving it locked to Orange however. Check Ebay for prices.

Thanks for your reply. I were under the impression that the phone would be locked to my sim, however if it is just locked to the orange network it should not be a problem.

To get that Free you'll be on one heck of a montly payment, it's not even free on the the most expensive Tarrifs for new customers.

You may be better long term getting a cheaper tarrif than getting the Iphone 4GS to sell on.

I am unsure at present which phones I will definitely be allowed to upgrade to free. It currently says I can get the iPhone free but am not currently eligible to upgrade till February. I will look in February to see which phones I can definitely get for free and then get the most valuable one to sell.

My current tariff is around £30.

It is almost certain that you'd be better off simply not taking the upgrade, and taking a SIM only deal from the same/another network.

If you talk to retentions and try to get them to give you a cheap deal, you'll most likely end up doing even better.

Mobile phone contracts are essentially loans with a high rate of APR, with service tacked on. If you want a new phone or some cash in your hand straight up, you're better off just using a credit card in most cases.

You may be able to upgrade to the 3GS for free, but you'll almost certainly have to pay for a 4 or 4S.

If you can get the 4S 64gb on a £30 pcm contract take it as soon as you can. The 4S 64GB retails at £700, you should be able to ebay if for £600+ making your two year contract less than a tenner a month which beats most sim free deals.

An officially SIM free iPhone is worth considerably more than one locked to Orange (or any other network). If you are speculatiung on making a profit on selling, I'd urge caution as many have come a cropper when the sale falls through for unexpected reasons, and they are still stuck with a very expensive ongoing commitment.

I am looking at upgrade options at the moment and on the Orange website it shows the iPhone 4s 64gb as being available as a 'free' upgrade to me.

However, once you add the phone to your basket and go through the checkout process it shows that the actual cost would be over £200.

The 4s is only free to those taking out the big monthly tariffs.
