The first time we visited Australia we flew from Heathrow into Sydney for 10 days (seeing Sydney and the Blue Mountains) then we flew internally from Sydney to Cairns for 5 days on the reef then flew back to Heathrow from Cairns which saved the 3 hour flight back to Sydney and didn't cost much more.

Don't forget Christmas to End of January is peak time in Australia as it's also school summer holidays so places can get booked up or have minimum stay requirements.

We had 3 weeks in Aus in July - Cairns - Ayers Rock - Sydney. Whilst in Sydney we stayed in the Quay West in a 1-bed apartment. This is in the Rocks area.
You may also want to take a look at Holiday Inn Old Sydney as that seemed to be in a good location and will be cheaper than Quay West.

Take a look at Tripadvisor - I put my trip reports and reviews on there. They may give you some ideas. (Same username as on here.)

    Hi,

I've looked on Traveladvisor Quay West looks amazing, the pictures of the views are just wow, def a place that we will be looking at staying at?

Anyone else recconmend any where else to stay?? :D
  • I can highly recommend the North Sydney Harbour View hotel. It's on the north side of the Harbour Bridge but just a short taxi ride to the Opera House and Circular Quay. The views from the hotel are amazing and if you are planning to watch the NYE fireworks you are in a prime position without having to join the massed throngs on the harbour. Lovely rooms, ask for a high floor as the trains start quite early and go right under the hotel.
Great bar and restaurant and nice helpful staff. Hope you have a fantastic trip. Hope to be there myself x
