Urgent help required - problem with Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830

I did a download of my contacts and was then asked if I wanted to upgrade hardware. As I was already connected I decided to upgrade and this is where the problem started. The device was not recognised on my PC and then on the screen of my android I have displayed - a phone and PC with an interconnecting dotted line with a warning yellow triangle:exclamati . I cannot turn the mobile off nor can I seem to solve the problem. Can anyone suggest what I do now. I need my phone urgently as I am going on holiday and wish to take it with me.
I don't know how to do a reboot or even if this will clear the problem.
Please help.

Disconnect it, pull the battery out to turn it off, then turn it on again. Sorted.
