I can image you've done this. Ask why they took it, say you didnt want them to and ask for it back. Any reasonable company would honour that request.
  • Hey the_matrix,

When did you set the domain name not to renew? I know that the payment is taken 30 days before its renewal date to ensure that customers do not loose domain names. So if it was the day before renewal it would have been taken. I believe on my account they sent warnings on 60 and 30 days to let you know.

No. I thought best to post here and ask first. I jave now emailed and received a auto-response. I'm hoping on Monday for a positive outcome. I will post what they say here.

I set it several months ago as the idea was not going anywhere so just a waste of good money. Classic money saving tip- don't use; don't renew.

  • Ah understandable, I would advise just double checking the domain to make sure it is set not to renew and ensure any other hosting services are set for cancellation if enabled still.

    Dear XXX,

The domain name XXX.com was billed on the 8/12/11 because it was set to auto renew. You only turned the domain name off on the 31/12/11 at 13:25.

you might have a better chance of a fast resolution if you gave them the information of when you turned the auto renew off etc, rather than just 'i dispute it'.

The reply i have got is:

    Dear XXX

The information I have provided is from the renewal settings logs for the domain name XXX.com.

It shows renewal was set to disabled 31/12/11 at 13:25.

If you are saying you did this prior to this date can you confirm the date and approximate time?

    Regards,

    Hi

I did do this but can't confirm date and time for obvious reasons as no reasonable person retains this type of data. However, I can confirm it was done and done before the date you have indicated. Clearly it is an error on your part. You know what computer systems are like. They are prone to glitches.

    Bye

No money yet but there are other options. I'm hoping they will see sense and refund else this may get long winded.

You don't know when and on the other hand say it was done before xx date .

You have no record of this cancellation and most reasonable people would have made a note of this vital information and might even have some proof .

Nothing in that would give them grounds to believe you are in the right on the other hand they might just be glad to get rid of you and pay up .

if i register a domain the first thing i do is set the auto renew to manual and take a screenshot (timestamped) showing it as off on the date and time i turned it off. the only domains i have on autorenew are my main site domains
