Job dilemma - Barratts or Tesco!

Hi,

Just after some impartial employment advice from my fellow money savers!

My wife works for Barratts shoe shop but yesterday landed a job at a new Tesco's store.

The Barratts job is more "her" (can dress smart and wear make-up) and she is unsure how she will adjust to supermarket work.

However, Barratts are now in administration with the future most uncertain.

She is not sure what to do, the dilemma being does she hang on to her current job and maybe get a bit of redundancy pay or cut her losses and start afresh with Tesco.

Maybe Tesco employees out there could offer some advise.

Regards

Paul

how long has she worked there? most statutory redundancy, and she'd only get statutory, isn't enough to hang on for. So unless she's been there since the 1800s I would move on.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • True, 8 years employed there, I think her redundancy would be between £800-£1000.
  • IMHO I'd bite tesco hand off, if you stay at barrets and get your grand. You might find yourself looking for work for far longer than it would take you to earn a grand at tesco :/
  • I agree liggins, plus I believe jobseekers allowance is only paid for 6 months.

Tesco. A job now is better than a meagre payoff and no promise of a job thereafter. Once her Barratts store is closed, there will be a number of staff chasing the same jobs available and that reduces her chances.

However, the biggest thing to look at is her happiness at the end of the day. Does she need the job or is yours safe enough to cope with paying everything if she has no income? If she needs then job then Tesco it must be. There is no point in holding out for Barretts to perhaps find a new buyer or that they may keep some staff on and others gone; there is no loyalty onboard a sinking ship and whilst she may be the best worker that Store has ever had, if she doesn't match the £numbers she will be one that goes.
  • Thanks skylight, at the moment she does need a job and am agreeing with you that Tesco it must be. Nothing wrong with trying it while Barratts search for a buyer!

in this climate, Tesco as an option is probably one of the safer opportunities out there, i cant see them laying anyone off in the near future

    but then again, who knows?

    no its not
  • Tesco will definitely be the better job, I imagine the rate of pay and associated perks will be worth much more. What sort of contract are they offering her? They don't give out permanent, fixed hour contracts too often these days so she would be mad to refuse one for a job at failing Barratts. Opportunities at Tesco are plentiful too so many different jobs and hours to fit around your family. The staff discount is worth over £700 per year if you spend it all and you are likely to if you have a family. There is a yearly bonus, share save scheme and decent pension.
