The screen on my current phone (Nokia X3-02) has broke so looking for another.

Is the iPhone 4S worth the extra over the iPhone 4?

Dont like the look of the user interface on the new Nokia Lumia 800, looks horrible compared to the old Nokia system.

Why i am considering the N8 or E9.

  • I would go with the cost savings brought with an iphone 4 instead of the extra apple premium with the 4s. As you didn't have an iphone as your last phone you won't notice any difference. I wouldn't go for a nokia full stop. I have been there and done that with the classics such as the 8210 etc on pay and go remember them. Of course nokia has tried to shake that symbion software and turned with the times but I just don't think a nokia can delivery the user experience us with running bath water expect. Even a blackberry could do a better job.

As for those windows phones, why o why? I have outlook on my lappy.

My mum had an N8 and I have to say that it was truly awful. She couldn't figure out how to get to certain options and how to add stuff to the main screen etc. I've had many Nokia's in the past including several Symbian ones and I'm quite a tech whiz with electronics (even if I do say so myself). My HTC Desire for example I have rooted and done s-off and run custom rom's and kernels. Ok I know, probably gobbledygook but you get an idea of how much I like to tinker with stuff like this.

So, having gotton hold of my mums phone I was convinced that it was just her being useless with phones (this wouldn't be a surprise). Well, could I figure things out on it? Nope. Getting to certain things meant trailing through several sub-menus and as for the home screen, pass. I can safely say that it is without doubt the worst operating system I have yet laid eyes on, and I've had previous incarnations of Symbian phones aswell as Android and Windows phones. It has a 12.1MP camera and 16Gb onboard memory but apart from that it has zero saving graces. And that's before we get to the horrid Ovi app store.

In the end I sold it on Ebay for her and bought her a £100 Orange San Francisco Android phone (duly unlocked, rooted and rom changed by me of course). :) She absolutely loves the phone and has no problems at all with it.

In my opinion, avoid the N8 at all costs.

Tesco Mobile seems to be the best for iPhone:

    (All £25 12 month contracts)

    4 8GB: £215
    4 16GB £ 285
    4S 16GB £335

Just got a 4S on t-mobile through e2save (70 cashback) on a 35 a month tariff. I am now on my 4th iphone having started with the original... In my very humble opinion they are the best phones on the market. So easy to use etc etc. Why not look at getting her a 3gs on one of the cheaper tariffs? t-mobile are doing them for 15 a month....

If you are truly into technical tinkering such as ....

.....then I don't see how you couldn't get your head round the N8.

I have found it one of the easiest phones that I have tried, it has the best camera available, the best build quality and with a different operating systaem could have been brilliant.

The only negative thing I can say is that scrolling when browsing can sometimes be a bit jerky but I don't think you should write it off with........

  • I have tinkered with many phones, rooting, custom rom's, scripts etc and I totally agree with Parva that Symbian is the hardest OS to actually use and everything is not logically placed and you have to dig through what seems like a hundred menus and sub-menus just to get to the place you want to be.

Get the iPhone 4 it's still got a fair bit of life left in it and you won't pay the premium to get the 4S either.

As for the Lumia 800 I found that so easy to pick up and use and everything was intuitive unlike symbian,

Would you go for the iPhone 4 over the Nokia Lumia?

have looked at the Lumia 800 in phones4u but thought the user interface box style design did not look good.

What are the rest of the menu's like? similar to older nokias?

yes... app store on Apple is, i believe, the best out there for starters plus the range of accessories is unbeatable.
