I dont sell/offer web hosting which was suggested.

I host my own (Linode XEN) mail and other personal services through http, calendar and such. So, I can host a website.

So stop trying to be smart.

Now tell me I'm wrong and you're right...

There is NO such thing as a server operating system. Jesus oh lord.

    Tell me I am wrong.

Before you insult never assume your years of experience that you know anything.

Who has showed me wrong yet? I'm the only one providing evidence. Everyone else is shouting opinions or posting links to then look silly.

Instead of insulting, like a child, why not agree with me or show me why I am wrong.

    Taadaa!

Sharing common code does not make it the same, no hosting would ever use vista as the base OS. Conversly I would never use the server version of windows as my desktop OS because its processing its not geared towards the user.
Humans share a vast majority of their "codebase" with of mamals but we ares still vastly different.

The meer ability to each others jobs does not make them the same thing.
In theory I could use a spoon to dig a hole and shovel to eat my food, from a technically pedantic point of view you could say they were the same thing the assertation is still rather absurd.
Going further I could say Doctors, Firemen and IT support people dont really exist only people exist, while techinically correct its not actully practically useful, especially if your sick, your house is on fire or your computer blows up.

Wrong. The software will run fine. Apache code is apache code, for example. The differences is in how its compiled for the particular arch essentially.

However, yes - pre compiled binaries wont work for other archs but this common sense. Yes yes, exceptions do exist but it remains true to the point.

The fact remains. Any server software will run fine on your home computer or any other computing device assuming its been compiled correctly.

In theory this true, in realty a lot of people would be out of job if it was and HP would not be sueing Oracle for dropping Itanium support.
a good deal of software needs to have some code to target specific platforms.

Take HTML and Javascript as an example in theory its fine to have the same code but in reality you have to take into account platform (browser) specifics.

It's perfectly possible to host your own website on your home PC if you want to do it on the cheap. It's not recommended, as you really should be running it 24/7 and you are responsible for all the support and upgrades aswell as any security on the device but it's a fun learning experience. Your main problem will be getting a static IP and not upsetting your ISP

I used to host my website on my home PC for a long time. As long as your ISP says it's OK to host your website at home on your home broadband it should be fine. To have a static IP all you do is modify the DNS A records to point to your IP address and the no-ip updater tool. When your IP addy changes your domain name would be domain.no-ip.org until the global DNS records have updated. When the IP changes you have to modify the DNS A records each time so that it acts as a "static IP".

In my opinion hosting internet on your home PC is a great learning experience and good if you like to delve or work on a budget. I only hosted on my home PC because it was a personal website with a low number of views. One of the main problems you encounter if Windows would be to install and configure MySql, Apache, etc.

In a professional sense, it's better to buy a domain name (registered to yourself) and a cheap webhosting package. I'd recommend looking on webhostingtalk.com (there is a section for free webhosting). So you can get a low price domain name (possibly £2.99) and some free web space, your equipment is then hosted on better hardware and you don't have to manage it (just make sure you take regular backups)!

If it's just a personal website, either self-host or get a low priced packaged. If it's a professional / business critical site, stump up and buy a proper hosting package that isn't oversold.
