My feeling is this is the beginning of the end for the time&half bank holidays, the new starters contracts already state that if there shifts fall on a bank holiday they have to work, where as our contract state that we only have to work two a year...soon we be asking if we can have another coal for the fire..sir..wont be long before they push to be open Christmas day0

But be heartened by the increased choice available to consumers. When what they really want is even more of our money just like Tesco.0

My feelings exactly, if they can arbitrarily move bank holidays around to suit themselves, they will end up doing away with them altogether or playing the system so it costs them less in wages.
I was told today by my section leader that i'd be better off not causing a storm about it and just be thankful i have a job. The problem is I have been walked all over by employers in the past and have vowed to never let it happen again.0 -
It is standard across all stores (except Scotland) that they are not redesignating the BH to Monday. They did this last year with Boxing day but after negotiations they did redesignate the BH. How long have you worked there?19.6.10 Weight loss 6lb

Not that they will be able to. Unless they downsize their stores by a lot. Not even Wal-Mart can get around the law (although they have tried getting around various laws, to be fair - they just aren't very good at it!). Any shop over 3,000 sq. ft is not able to open on Christmas Day.0 -

tbh I would join a union now - think from memory it only costs about £1.35 per week.
Personally I can see a time when companies will stop paying extra time for bank holidays as there seems that this issue of whether a day is a bank holiday seems to crop up time after time and especially now that the statutory minimum holidays now include a provision for bank holidays as well.2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.
Overpayment to date : £310

I spoke to an employment law solicitor yesterday and he believes that this is the case and most retail stores will be pushing for this over the next year. Of-course it does not affect your statutory holiday entitlement of 28 days per year (which includes bank holidays). So I will still be entitled to this amount, but the issue of paying more on bank holidays will be needed to be looked into further.
I will keep this post updated with any news.0
