02 top up on new phone

Have now decided on getting a phone (for my mum) from O2 as i've found out that her giff gaff sim should work in one of their phones, anyway does anyone know if there's a way round of getting out of having to buy a top up with the phone? I have a couple of 02 sims that i got free through the post and wondered if i could just get an upgrade that way?

You can use the sims you have already and do an upgrade as long as they've been used (ie topped up).

If not you'll have to buy the top up with the phones, there's no way around it.

Apparently topping up may be not sufficient.

That said, CPW have two £9.50 sim-free phones on offer that don't require top up.
