re. DVD player /recorder not compatible with HDMI cables

When I ordered my new TV yesterday and needed to buy 1 or more HDMI cables, I was told that a DVD player/recorder will only take scart cables but a DVD player can use HDMI cables. This took me by surprise. I now wonder whether it is for copyright protection reasons to stop viewers trying to save films/programmes in HD. Or is there another reason?

  • Yes HDMI has certain copyright technologies incorporated into the more recent build tvs and devices that prevent recordings, hence why scart and AV cables are usually used on recorders.

I have a DVD recorder connected to my TV with a HDMI cable.

Many DVD players and recorders have HDMI outputs and upscale the SD DVDs to HD for display on your TV but no DVD recorder has an HDMI input - no point really as the DVD recorder cannot record in HD. In this case nothing whatsoever to do with HD copy protection.

Not the case with DVD recorders as in this thread.

Yeah, you can't have an HDMI INPUT on a recorder, but an OUTPUT is fine, so someone got confused along the way. Plenty of DVD recorders with HDMI OUT.
