24 month contract without permission

I've been using 3 for over a year now. I took out a MiFi dongle with 5GB internet and I was paying 15.99 a month for it. Later I decided to go to Utility Warehouse who were to charge the same amount for unlimited internet (without a fair usage policy).

I called 3 and told them I'd like to end my rolling monthly contract because I'd found a more suitable deal. The adviser said to me that he could up my usage to 15GB and I would pay no more - "Try it out for a month, sir. If you don't like it then you can cancel at any time."

I just went onto My 3 online to check how much internet I've got left. I noticed that it says '15GB 24 Month' at the top.

I didn't agree to any contracts. And I wasn't told anything about a contract. Had I known, I would have refused whole heartedly. The thing is, if I bring it to their attention right now, they will most likely give me the option to go back to 5GB a month. But if I hang on to it until I'm ready to leave, they will have to provide me with the 15GB for as long as I want it.

Does this kind of thing happen a lot? Is it common practice to sign people up to contracts without there knowledge or permission?

My best guess is that it's a systems glitch of sorts - the retentions employee will have chosen a package off the list that suited you best.

I doubt that you have been signed up for anything, but I would call to make sure.
