Chip and PIN nightmare

Heartfelt apologies to the lady who appeared on Watchdog today.

Long and the short of it, she is an A&L customer who had her account emptied via her debit card and A&L refused to give the money back. Now she has no money to pay her bills.

The only way I can think to reduce the risk of being out of pocket is to use a credit card for purchases. That way there is time between receiving your statement and the payment being due to sort the mess out.

Listening to Sandra Quinn promoting the Banking Code and what should happen, sounds very hollow. I hope A&L readers of your posting contact A&L and ask them to re-imburse this OAP victim.

    There is another way.

Opt for a Chip & Signature Card and continue to sign. As one of the gentlemen interviewed stated - when you sign liability for fraud doesn't enter the equation.

Watchdog showed how victims of PIN based fraud weren't beleived that they didn't use their card and PIN before they reported the loss of their card or spotted fraudulent transactions.

This cost one poor old lady thousands.

Wathdog also disclosed information about this potential scam (click here).

On the strenght of Watchdog The Best MoneySaving tip you'll ever get is to BIN your PIN with your credit card and get yourself Chip & Signature Cards.

    Chip and pin
Some banks are refusing to refund customers whose chip-and-pin cards have been used fraudulently. Watchdog investigates.

Can you refuse to have a chip and pin card, and just have a signature card???

I dont think that is an option these days as many retailers do not accept debit cards unless you have Chip and Pin which is a pain in the rear.

But I pay mainly with cash anyway, as this makes me think about the physical handing over of money more!!! (Small things, small minds, as my Grandma used to say!)

All my cards are Chip & Signature, they are accepted everywhere.

Just tell your card issuer that you don't trust PINs, you feel unsafe using a PIN, you can never remember seldom used numbers and if they don't furnish you with a Chip & Signature Card you'll close your account.

A Chip and PIN retailer doesn't know if a card that is inserted in the Chip reader is Chip and PIN or Chip and Signture until the transaction slip is produced for the cardholder to sign.

    Hope this helps.

And the mugger standing behind you in the queue ... thinking to himself "Damn it - I only got 1 number out of the last guys PIN ... couldn't get his card with out it - maybe the next one" ... spots you signing in a C&P shop and thinks

"HOT DAMN! All I have to do is nick this guys card - I practise his signature for 2 seconds and I've got a working card until he notices and if I pick his pocket right that won't be for hours! The shop won't check the signature anyway ... wow ... easy target huh!"
