This is the watch I have. Not terribly expensive, though I suppose rather showy.

I simply enjoy watching the motion - I decided to get myself one after seeing an old portable mechanical clock in action. I suppose it appeals to the tinkerer in me. One of my few luxuries (if you can call it that).

I have a £2 digital sports watch that just tells the time. Bizarrely, it's less accurate than my mechanical one (it loses a few seconds a day!). Bloody eBay.

  • On an interesting twist, my Rado watch batteries started to run out today and it's just cost me £55 to send the watch off to Rado to get the battery changed. Perhaps I should look at a perpetual self winding model, it'd pay for itself in batteries at that rate!

    Fascinating.

£55 for a new battery ? Time to buy a new watch.

I agree, My ex was recently quoted £900+ vat to have a service and minor repair on a Breitling I bought him (when we were an item)

Ironically the watch was only £1600 about 5 years ago...

Just think of all those poor b*ggers who signed up for sofas in the DFS sales last year: "Pay nothing for 12 months." Next week they have to start paying for that faded, sagging settee.

Fine if you have plenty (and I mean plenty) of spare cash. Even so, what a rip off !

It's like owning an expensive sports car - expensive to buy, and expensive to service. Why should a full service on a high end Merc cost ~£1000, but only £250 on a Focus ? OK, there's a few extra plugs to change on the Merc, and the oil might be fully synthetic. Dealer thinks "owner paid a lot for the car, they'll pay loads for the service".
