Cath Kidston

My OH bought me a bag from Cath Kidston for my birthday last year, I've used it occassionally on and off, so prob. about 3 - 5 weeks worth of use in total. Today one of the straps that hold the buckle down has literally fallen off in my hand. I know it's over a year old but surely this is unreasonable for the amount of wear and tear the bags seen and the cost of the bag itself. It was one of the larger satchel bags. I've had a look through the faulty goods act, and I could do with a simplified version really.

Thanks :)

How much did the bag cost? How long you can reasonably expect it to cost would depend on this.

Also, where was it from? Some retailers are easier to deal with then others!

Have you asked the retailer if they can help you?

    Faulty goods act? Simplified version?

How about reading MSE's Consumer Rights article?
Lots of info in there... easy to understand too.
  • Thanks for the help. It was from Cath Kidston online and was £69. So to be honest I'd expect it to last awhile. Thanks for the direction to the goods act simplified gave me a far better idea! :D I'll speak to them directly and see where I get.

I took a Cath Kidston bag back last year as the zip had broken after 3 months use. I had my receipt and the SA was lovely and exchanged it without any issues.

I should think they will swap it, although they may wish to repair - I doubt it, though.

For £69 I'd expect it to last much more usage then you've had from it!

Considering the bag is over twelve months old, I would be amazed if the shop swaps it for a new one.

Saying that though........If they did swap it, I'd be completely impressed with their customer service offering waaaaay over and above what the OP is entitled to by law.

Send it back to their warehouse in St Neots, with a nice polite letter, complimenting the brand etc and I'd be very surprised if they did not replace it providing it's a genuine CK product
  • Thanks for the advice everyone. I do think it's unacceptable that a bag that's hardly been used has parts falling off of it though. I'd say it is DIY repairable, but it's the leather parts so I don't really want to ruin the leather (if that makes any sense).

I spoke to the store and they said to bring it in, and they can have a look at it and see what they can do from there, so it's some progress I suppose.

  • My OH has a £60 bag that is 8 months old and about 2 months back the zip just started popping so is faulty. Its harly been used and is as new. Just spoke to CK head office and they said all CK items only have 6 month cover as standard, my receipt does not state this and I thought that as long as it isnt deemed wear and tear you get 12 months to exchange etc. This was an expensive purchase and we thought a quality item. We bought it on holiday and cant get back to that store. CK said they may consider it if we send to them at our cost but couldnt guarentee it.
Are they able to rule only 6 months guarentee, the receipt states clearly i have rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979.
We could take a punt on a drive to a more local store but we are really annoyed at CKs attitude.
