Handset needed - Recommendations?

Options
I am half way through a 24 month contract with Orange. Actually a good deal only £22 a month for 800 min, limitless texts and unlimited internet.

Unfortunately I killed my uninsured handset about 6 months ago and have since been using a cheap Nokia. This however does not have the facility for internet connection and I would like a handset where I can keep abreast of my pages on Facebook and Twitter as well as simple but not excessive browsing. Decent battery life and a fairly robust handset (have horses will be dropped, rained on and slobbered on!) is important.

What is my cheapest way of getting a handset, not up for modern or fashionable but just functional. Are the reconditioned phones on ebay any good or should I risk 2nd hand. Any recommendations of models or place to look / buy?

Thinking of sub £50 but the less the better!

  • How about a new san francisco 2 then sell it on ebay when you get your upgrade

Looks a nice phone but really don't want to pay for a new one at the going rate.

At the budget end you're better off buying a PAYG handset, unlocking and sticking a sim only plan in it (Giff Gaff is decent if you're not an idiot who needs molly coddling and super customer service).

Handset wise, the Orange San Francisco II or T-Mobile Vivacity (both the same phone) are great for the money.

Both are decent enough to get an Iphone 4 user feeling sick that they are paying four times as much for so little more.

I think you have to cut your demands.

Motorola Defy springs to mind (not sure about frequent dropping), but even second hand it will be much more expensive.

Nokia E63 goes for around £50 on eBay - ticks most of your boxes.

Why would he want to stick a sim only plan in it (such as Giffgaff) when he has got a sim with 12 months or so of an Orange contract that he wants to use up?
