HELP! New TV won't tune :(

I've just replaced my old portable tv in my room.
I used to get BBC1, BBC2, ITV & Channel 4.

I have replaced it with a new 19" freeview with built in DVD player and plugged the aerial into the back of it. For some reason my new TV won't even tune into the 4 basic channels :(

Does anyone know what I need to do?

    Has your area switched to digital? If so their won't be any analogue channels to receive.
    Your new TV will have both analogue and digital tuners, are you sure you have set it up correctly? Try re running the install programme.

    PS What happens if you connect the old TV to the aerial?
    That gum you like is coming back in style.

    In my eagerness to hook my new one I've already taken the old one downstairs - I'll go and lug it back up again! ;)

    Hmmm, still getting a very clear picture on my old TV but not the new one! Think I'm going to have to try manual tuning the analogue....

    That is so annoying for you. You've got to be sure the new TV is working. Are you able to put a DVD in and see if you get a picture at least? If so then I'd take it to where your main TV is and connect it there and see if that does the trick. I can think of several things which can go wrong on setup but I'm not there with you and I'm no TV engineer.

    Yep - super annoying!! Thought technology was supposed to get better!
    Anyway, I'm still running through the manual analogue tuning (it takes a while!) but so far I've found BBC1 and ITV so I'll just persevere with it this way! Thanks for your help guys! :)

    Its a Technika - has had a lot of good reviews though!
    I've now just got Channel 4 & 5 to tune in (I'm not bothered about the other freeview channels just now!)

    I'm really glad you're getting somewhere but I can't help feeling you're missing something. This TV should tune in automatically. I've bought five of these flat screen jobbies over the last few years and they all had an idiot guide and tuned themselves in. Were I you I'd be slowing down and starting to read the manual again to see how this process works and perhaps identify what I've done wrong. The fact that you can get a picture tells me it's user error on the autotune.

    Also: you may have a weak signal. Try and get channel 5. If you can get that clearly then your signal is strong enough for you to do a digital tune which will give you so many more channels. If it's not strong enough then you need to put a masthead amplifier on the aerial to tune the TV properly.

    Failing that mate I'd pay somebody to put satellite in your bedroom.

    I did wonder if I'd done something wrong on the auto-tune but it's so straight forward when you first switch it on that I can't really see what I could have done wrong. I ran it twice more just in case and it does say 'bad signal'. Weird considering that I had 1-4 so clearly before. Anyway, at least I now have the channels I had before and I do think I'm in a weak area for freeview so I wasn't expecting all the other channels anyway. Just a bit time consuming!!

    I think you've hit the nail on the head with the comment "weak signal". Modern TV's are less tolerant of a poor signal. What you do is up to you though and it very much depends on what you're going to use the TV for. If you want a full TV service it's either sort the aerial or get a sattelite/cable system installed. If you want it for DVD's and to watch the BBC news then you're ok and need to do nothing.
