you can plug the machine directly into the router with an ethernet cable and update/download it

if you are saying the router is using wpa - check that wpa is not currently an option in the machines encryption settings

to install sp 1 do I need to be connected to the internet, I downloaded on this machine but when I went to install on the other laptop it was saying it couldn't download some bits... is there a way of getting sp1 without connecting the other machine to the internet.

i.e. d/l on here and then transfer on USB and install that way?

    Many thanks

Ignore the warnings :) and download SP3 from

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24 onto your laptop.

Just transfer how you like and then double click to install.

It *should* mean you don't have to install intermediate SPs (unlike Vista), WPA was not initially supported in XP, this came later.
    Move along, nothing to see.

WEP is effectively obsolete and can be hacked in seconds-it really is time you upgraded to WPA.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hmmm....WEP. I wonder if someone has spent the 10 seconds it takes to crack it, logged into your router and changed the key for kicks and giggles. Connect to it with a network cable and verify the wifi settings on the router.
