I think there are so many different variables you'll never know about people. Debts, low mortgages, inheritances all can contribute to an appearance of "wealth".0

...I had a similar feeling about friends. I just couldnt understand how they "did" so much. A birthday for one of the kids would be presents, go ape, karting, cinema & a meal!
My Ds will be 10 in June and we are planning on taking him to Legoland with his best friend, the cinema with another friend and an Indian sit down meal... plus presents!!
Legoland - Tesco Clubcard Vouchers
Cinema - Tesco Clubcard Vouchers
Meal - DS is saving to take me out for my Birthday, so we agree to go halves on this... he will save £30 for my Birthday in April, and I will save £30 for his Birthday in June... and then we will go out for a joint birthday meal
Just a pity he decided on a resteraunt which isn't part of the tesco Clubcard Scheme!
That will leave me £70 to buy him gifts!
That's where your friends went wrong... they didn't save their vouchers! We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
OP why dont you ask them how they do it?0

Julie, Join the Frankie and Bennys birthday club and you'll get a free meal for the birthday personOr, go on Mondays and it is 25% off your bill. Hopefully there will be one near you and you can persuade him.

People presume a lot too about what they consider essentials.
I have a mobile phone but no contract. I'm down to about £2 credit but on checking it.... it was Feb when I last topped up. And that wouldn't have been any more than £20, more likely £15.
Plus, people think nothing of paying finance on a car, forgetting that some of us save up to replace our motors when they are nothing short of knackered.
Nor do we consider it necessary to replace household items until they are beyond use. Or decorate every year or buy new tellies, game consoles etc.
And I personally have never had a credit card, I do as my dad taught me - save up for stuff.
I always save for stuff too and do similar things to you - however when it comes to credit cards I have several.
With them Ive earnt thousands of airmiles and nectar points. I only put on it what I can afford to pay back straight away. So they actually save me money and contribute towards my holidays.0 -

Bless, your DS sounds lovely!
This year both my children went segwaying with 3 friends each for their birthday - paid for by clubcard vouchers.
Last year DS went paintballing and daughter went to cinema for their birthdays - both with clubcard vouchers.
Can't remember what they did the year before, but sure it was something with clubcard vouchers!
We have also done legoland, alton towers etc numerous times, again paid for with clubcard vouchers. They're fab, and so many people spend them instore without realising their proper worth.0 -
I have to agree, I am the 'poorest' of my friends but I get by on deals, sale stuff and glitches and use the money saved for a really nice holiday.0

I only wish! Thank you for the suggestion.
But you see the last time we went out for a sit down meal was over 18 months ago before I was made redundant... and my DS wants to go to the 'Indian' we went to 2 years ago for DH Birthday, it was his first meal at a fancy resterant and he just loved it! He has his heart set on going, he's mentioned it a few times since then!
But he wanted to save and take me for my Birthday in April... While we were going to take him to Pizza Hut in June... so DH and I thought that since he had his heart set... that we would go halves
And you have to be impressed with a 9 year old who can save £30 of pocket moneyWe spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like.
