OK so I spoke to hotpoint. They say that because the machine is out of warranty, it will cost £105 for an engineer to come out and inspect it. OR I can pay 14 pounds a month (something like 180 quid) for a year's warranty. The machine will then get inspected, new parts or full replacement if necessary.

Is there any way I can get someone to inspect this for cheaper?

But a warranty will not cover a pre-existing fault.
Get an independent white goods repair service to come out and check it-should be about half that cost.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Have a look for local repair people. Type it into google and you'll find some local people, phone them and ask them how much it will cost.

and anybody including yourself would do exactly the same rather than fork out another 400 quid... what's this forum called again?

    Er no I wouldn't.
The forum is about money saving not about committing fraud.

If the £14 a month will include an inspection of the current problem and any repair and cover going forward, I would take it. there may be no current fault but something could go wrong because of what has happened.

Although usually insurance excludes faults occurred before you took out the policy, sometimes manufacturers will cover the current fault to encourage you to take the policy.

Get a sense of proportion. I'm not swindling old ladies. Whether it got overloaded or gave way of its own accord is a small distinction. I'm sure you would not just shrug your shoulders and fork out another 400 quid to a corporation, you just won't admit it.

    Thanks for all your replies!

No I would get a local repair man as suggested several times already. £14 a month is quite a lot over a year towards a new machine
When it does eventually break down (its a Hotpoint) switch for a Bosch/Siemens etc with a decent warranty as standard
