OP, you have no right to return the item.
In the absence of a description, you seem to be suggesting that you are entitled to rely on your interpretation of what a stand is.
Of course you can make assumptions, but it is exactly for this reason that the Distance Selling Regulations were introduced.
As you know, the DSRs allow you seven working days after delivery to inspect the goods and advise the seller that you wish to cancel the order.
Easy to say with hindsight, but you really should've inspected the goods in the appropriate timescale.0 -

Not really sure you have any grounds to return. Stand to me doesnt mean standing up, just means something to rest it on. I mean think about a tv stand, umbrella stand, shoe stand etc.
Perhaps a good time for us all to remember to check goods when we receive them (if buying birthday/xmas presents early) to ensure what we've received is what we thought we were getting and that it works also
