stitched up by Cooper Sewing Machines

I purchased a sewing machine and steam press for my wife for Christmas back in October on 4 monthly instalments. I hid these in the loft until Christmas and they were duly opened on Christmas day. I unpacked the steam press which came with a free stand only to find once put together that the stand is all of 3 foot high! I looked in dismay at the present I had been looking forward to using as I used to be a dry cleaner so I have used commercial presses before although this is for home use only. So I said to my wife it is going back so I put everything back in the original packing, and waited for the next working day to ring to return the item. I rung and spoke to the owner Mr Cooper from Cooper sewing machines and he said I had no right of return as it is over 7 days since I brought the item and he said the stand is only to be used when seated, or you place the steam press on a table. I told him that I found this misleading as to me a stand implies 'stand' to use like an ironing board, and there is no wording of any sort stipulating that the ironing press must be used on a table or while seated which are two pretty major factors. If I had known of these limitations I wouldn't have purchased the press. So where do I stand as Mr Cooper refuses to allow me to return the goods as over 7 days right of return and they are not faulty?

I think he means this one:

Not really sure you have any grounds to return. Stand to me doesnt mean standing up, just means something to rest it on. I mean think about a tv stand, umbrella stand, shoe stand etc.

Perhaps a good time for us all to remember to check goods when we receive them (if buying birthday/xmas presents early) to ensure what we've received is what we thought we were getting and that it works also :)

  • Yep I though of that issue, as I fitted a bike stand for my sons bike on Christmas. When you sell a 'stand' it must be fitting to the item it was designed to work with. My issue is with the fact that they compare this product to ironing and being the same size as a commercial press. It is no where near the same size and with commercial presses you stand up to work, as with ironing, most people stand to do their ironing and if they wish they may lower it and sit. Its like buying a bike and only realising when you get it that it comes without a seat and no way of fitting a seat, because this bike is designed only to be ridden while stood up, because some people choose to ride upright instead of sitting down, but its still a bike. Sitting down would be taken for granted as I took for granted that I would be able to stand. Thats a pretty big condition not to advertise, I don't want a seatless bike, nor do I want an ironing press thats 4 foot off the ground.

On the listing it states: The reason for the name commercial is that it is the size of a commercial press

    This is a domestic press

This press cannot be used for commercial work

What date did you order the press? I know you said October but exactly what date?

  • I was happy that its for domestic use as I wasn't expecting to have anything like I have used when I was a dry cleaner. I ordered the products on 18th of October, they arrived a couple of days later, the boxes where opened on the 25th dec and repacked on the 25th dec, unused, with complete original packing. I actually rung and asked for a full sized stand but they are only sold with one size (short) as they are sold 'to be used while seated' Mr Coopers words to me on the phone. As I said to him thats a pretty big condition to omit from their website and if I known I wouldn't have purchased it.

the reason i asked the date is that the part i pasted was added on the 8th october, if you had bought before then you may have had grounds to return for not as described. And even then, after a reasonable time has passed you would have been deemed to have accepted the goods.

At present though, i cant really see any grounds for a return.
