Mistaken Identity

It's highly likely that the registration number was written/taken down incorrectly at the scene, it's surprisingly rather common. When a third party insurer intimates a claim against one of our policyholders we ask what we call RTA questions (registration, make, model, colour, driver name, address etc and a description of the driver). If our insured then states that they were not involved in the incident and the third party insurer is unable to provide the above details we would decline to deal with their claim.
On the basis of the information you have provided i.e. the accident location was not near your home and the driver was the wrong gender I would say the registration was recorded wrong at the scene (could be due to illegible handwriting). You need to find out what RTA info the third party insurers hold. Assuming all they have is an incorrect name and registration I suspect your insurer will request the Third Party Insurer obtain a judgment before they would deal (which they would find difficult assuming they only have limited info).
I would also request your insurer sends one of their engineers out asap to inspect your vehicle to prove there is no damage to support the Third Party's allegations - This is something we do as a matter ofcourse if our Insured's denies involvement in an alleged incident.0 -
