o2 contract cancellation on death?

Hello,

Does anyone know, or better still can point me to O2's policy when a subscriber dies? My Mum needs a new mobile phone but unfortunately there is a significant chance that she may not live the 24 months of the typical contract.

If she was to die after 6 months what is the policy? Will o2 demand that the contract is payed for the remaining 18months from her estate? Or will they write off the contract? With or without having to return the phone?

Does anyone know?
Many thanks!

Death or bankruptcy are generally the only circumstances that will void a contract. The phone is owned by the account holder from day one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • You'll need to contact them if she passes & send a copy of the death certificate to get the contract cancelled.

  • If it is unfortunate enough to happen, then you would need to ring 202 from her O2 mobile, select the option for account/billing changes and ask for the bereavement team as the account holder has died. You will then need to send the death certificate and they will cancel the contract.

We had to do it recently unfortunately, but they were extremely helpful.

    Hope that helps

I probably did come across as a bit rude, but Its just the way
I read the op, asking if the network will want the phone back.

There are people out there who will take advantage of a family
member dying to get something out of it.

Im probably completely wrong, and if I am, I apologise, but I
just don't see why its a relevant question..
  • Well thanks for the information. I'm afraid that some of the comments do sound callous, and quite rude considering the circumstances. I have a pretty thick skin, but people should be aware that these sort of veiled accusations are exactly the thing not needed by someone with terminally ill relatives.

The fact that you assume that the lowest possible motivation one might have for making such a post - that of getting a free iphone - is the one true one is pretty disappointing.

Maybe if you had poor sight you'd want a nice large, clear, bright display. Maybe you'd want to make life easy and stick with an interface you were already experienced with? Maybe if you were house bound or bed ridden you'd want the benefits of an iphone so you could facetime with friends and relatives? Maybe you'd want to be able to check your email from the comfort of your bed? Maybe, even though you have a poor prognosis you'd still want to make informed financial decisions ensure that your young dependants aren't unnecessarily financially burdened after your death. Maybe the thought of giving back a phone owned by a deceased loved one, with photos, videos, text messages and so on is not something you want to do straight after they pass away.

I'm afraid the scamming a free iphone out of o2 isn't even on my list.
  • Hi jeffff, moneymogul is quite right, if the worst does happen just call 202 free of charge from any 02 pay monthly handset, and ask to speak to the bereavement team. They are a dedicated team that deal with all issues surrounding the passing of a customer and will help you sort out the termination of the contract etc. Hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does there will be someone on hand to help :)

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
